ABSTRACT

The world over continues to grow in population, size and sophistication Technology. It becomes sector on which the teeming population depends in for knowledge also grows.

Be it as it may, the Nigerian situation is such that we, for the state of advantages associated with technological growth have started computerizing most business and educational operation in our higher institutions of learning and business organizations big and small. Two of such organizations are A.G Leventis and Pak – Micro Computer Ltd, which were understudied for the impact of computer technology on accounting system and its effect in employment.

The problem, purpose and significance of the study to A.G Leventis and Pak – Micro Computer were considered. Review of existing literature will then follow. The research method made use of diverse research tools were equally employed to analyze data collected. A careful analysis of generated data revealed to the researcher that the use of computer in A.G. Leventis and Pak – Microcomputer was set up ten years ago. Areas of computer application include:

  • General accounts
  • Inventory and
  • Payroll

In testing the problem, respondents agreed that computerization led to mass retrenchment of workers. However research revealed otherwise.

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Days are when most accounting operations and decisions that have to be made on or from them are on first hand basis. This is because accounting operators and decision makers are in close contact with such accounting operations and as such, collected, analysed and interpreted data from such operations for decision making.

Today, as company and educational operations expand in size and complexity, company executives grow further removed from first hand contact with business scenes. They are to rely increasingly on second hand information about what is happening at the various stages of business operations2, vis-à-vis research and development, production, marketing and consumption of goods and services. Since decisions that have to be made by executives are of profound consequences and have to be based on highly fragmented and typically tenous information, then it is of great importance that such second-hand information is from a very accurate and reliable sources3.

According to A.$. fapohunda, to remedy these accurate information difficulties in 1963, sears began establishing their twenty – two regional computer centers covering the entire unites states of America4. initially, the regional computer systems processed customers credit accounts and general accounting data.

Later, merchandising and inventory information from system were established to provide information that the business accounting world and business operations are also busy expanding their technological and industrial bases 6 by breaking into new grounds and improving in existing ones through the use of computers.

With the introduction of computer to many business applications, those business areas that involve repeated tasks which are often monotonous and fallible to human errors (cash, inventory control, payroll and etc) are increasingly being simplified accurately by combining the cost, effectiveness, simplicity of use, efficiency, reliability and accuracy of the computer to obtain, analyze and interpret data information for efficient business decisions. Nigerian business organizations being to grow in size, business operations and processes become increasingly complex, hence computers are being rapidly introduced to cope with the overwhelming demands of business and growth. Though the introduction of computer to many facets of business operations is a welcome idea, its use is further implicated on accounting system and as such organizations need to strike a balance between accounting areas to be manually operated so as to control or limit the menance associated with unemployment.

Some of the business operations to which computer has been successfully introduced;-7

  • Printing graphic designs of complicated nature.
  • Payroll system.
  • Billing system.
  • Predict election result.
  • Mark examination results such as JAMB and WAEC.
  • Control inventories.
  • Predict performance of an aircraft or missile still.
  • On drawing boards.
  • To calculate the critical path of most efficient assignment of troops or problems and so on.

It therefore becomes important that technological changes such as the introduction of computers in organizations be carefully evaluated so that the gains in technical efficiency are not made at the expense of the well-being and integration of employees.8. In the circumstances, then a study of the implication of computer introduction to accounting system of business operations is not only timely but mandatory so as to avoid some of the problems associated with technological changes in organizations.

This research is however, limited to the implication of computer introduction to accounting system of business operations using A.G. Leventis and Pak – Micro Computer Centre as computerized model organizations.

ABSTRACT

This research work is conducted as part of the requirement for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in financial studies (Accounting).

It highlights the authors effort in finding out the ways which management audit is used as a tool of achieving organizational objectives in our everyday organizations.

The entire work is divided into five chapters, chapter one is an introductory analysis of the topic, then the background of the study, significance, scope and limitation, the purpose and hypothesis.

The second chapter i.e. chapter two dealt with the Literature Review and Theoretical Consideration.

Here related past works were reviews and the theoretical consideration on the present study was also brought into focus.

As well as scope and nature of management audit and the result of auditing management.

Then, chapter three contains an explanation of how and where the needed information for the study was obtained and how the sample size was determined and the limitations encountered in the course of conducting the research.  It also contains the method of investigation.

Chapter four dealt with the presentation and analysis of data collected during the field survey, after which the postulated hypothesis were tested.

Lastly, chapter five makes up the summary, conclusion and

recommendations.

CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

In practice, there are two types of performance appraisal for instance, in appraising the lower level mangers, majority of firms utilizes traditional performance appraisal technique.  A check list and rating system were designed, and the immediate supervisors make arbitrary assessments of performance though the upper level mangers are conversant with the concept of management by objectives.

Secondly, the upper level manager’s performance is also evaluated.

For example, when evaluating the performance of a district manger, say the performance of the districted is evaluation and this becomes the determinant of the evaluation of the manger.  Furthermore, the evaluation performance of management as a whole is usually based purely on an analysis of financial accounting data exclusively.

One obvious reason for this occurrence is the lack of

agreement on a reliably tool for measurement of performance of management other than with the use of accounting data.

Recently, many have contended that in order to appraise the value of management, calculations must be made in addition to those prepare for financial ratio analysis.

It is in the context  that the management audit started.

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Management audit attempted to aid he management of the organisation by providing it with information and analysis useful in the process of control.  Management audit can also be significant in financial accounting area.  for many years now, stockholders, financial analysts, potential investors and other interested parties have been concerned with the annual reports of major co-operations and the attached letter form the president of the corporation.  The concern has been that though a financial audit of records of the company has been performed and an pinion had been rendered, there was no additional method by with the outsider could evacuate the performance of management in addition to evaluating the performance of the company.

Accountants have been attempting to deal with the problem for some years now and many proposals have been presented of which management audit is the one that I think that has the greatest potential for the future.  For both internal and external reporting for the future.  For both internal and external reporting purposes, who are capable of appraising performance both for accounting data and management analysis.

If this appraisal were made and an opinion rendered, the management audit would be of significant benefit to internal and external parties alike.

The theory of management audit parallels that of financial auditing.

The purpose of the audit is being the attestation of management’s representations by an independent examiner.

By attestation, I refer tot he reliability of management statements regarding its own decisions as proven by an independent third party.

The auditor’s financial statement examines the performance of the company accountable to the stockhold

          INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Banks plays crucial roles in the process of economic

development by mobilizing funds from the surplus spending units into the economy, and by on.  Lending such funds to the deficit spending units fro investment, banks increase I the process.  The quantum of national savings and investments through an appropriate investments multiplier, the volume of goods and services produced in an economy increases overtimes as a result of the investment projects embarked upon through banks funds.

Also through banks direct and indirect contributions towards the growth of the national economy, they (banks) succeed in promoting an efficient payment system, and in creating banking habits and in developing the society at large.

I intend to look at the possible reasons for bank distress and the effects of such failures on the rest of us before looking at “The Role of Accountant in Managing and Liquidating a Distress banks”.

A various times over the past five years of the structural adjustment programme (SAP) the banking industry had to cope with different types and forms of difficulties, all in a bid to record and sustain what one may call impressive performance we have for instance been at different times, the removal and late re-introduction of selling on interest rates.

The seemingly nectarous and dreaded stabilization securities have also become one source of treasury management policy devotement that banks have learnt to live with.

The term “distress” means great pains discomfort or serious sufferings caused by wants of money or mismanagement of money by bank officials which as we know is a complete relation of the trust reposed I them by innocent investors.

The role of accountant in managing and liquidating a distress banks are too much and cannot be over emphasized when liquidating a distress banks.

Accountants has to see that all the assets and liabilities of distress banks are being valued by expert values.

The accountant has to be fully involved in appointing an expert liquidator who would then sell the assets and liabilities of the distressed bank by means of auction to the general public.

In this case, it is not only that the property of the bank is being liquidated but also, the property of the debtors of the distressed bank.  The liquidator has to fall back on the assets which the debtors of the bank used as their collateral when borrowing money from the bank.

The money being recovered from the proceed should be used to settle the creditors of the distressed banks.  This is so because the bank has been turned “DISTRESS” by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a result of its inability to meet up with the stipulated guidelines of having of capital and non-marketable assets base.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

There are many problems which could eventually lead to bank

distress just as there are many possible causes of death of a human being.

Some of the problems are stated here but they are in no way exhaustive.

  1. Bad management
  2. Inadequate capital
  • Risk asset portfolio
  1. Assets and liabilities management
  2. Boardroom crisis
  3. Inability to adopt to changes

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Some time, managers, business men and women pay more attention to profit they are working in there organisation without putting into consideration time management. They forgot that if they did not manage their time very well their business will not effectively attain the level they wish it to attain. And as the activities of business organisation are production, marketing management, communication, motivation decision making and the rest of them. Non of this department in the business organisation will effectively and efficiently believe its objective without doing the things it ought to do at the right time. Infact no manager can achieve his objective or the acting at the right or appointed time.

How time master all of us, no one seems immune to its management. Master the problems of time having the time they need who find enough time to do what they really wants to do. Of the thousands of managers I have polled from board, chairman and chief executive to first line supervisors only one in a hundred has enough time, when others have being asked how much more time they would need to do the job, they will like to do one of ten says he would need 10% more four says 25% and remaining half say 50%. Thus we discover the paradox of time, few people have enough yet everyone has all there is.

Finally there is one thing each person has exactly the same amount and that is time. Thus the problem is not time per se. the problem lies within ourselves. The managers, salesmen, the house wife, the professionals the workers. It is not how much we have but rather what we do with the time we have how well we utilize it. It and  we should remember that time well and efficiently utilize bring forth good result. And if the managers are able to minimize interruption they can be able to control time.

  • WHAT IS TIME MANAGEMENT:

Time management means, being able to use or reduce the wasted time throughout a business activities. It can say to also mean, being able to use the scare time you have more effectively and efficiently.

Thus, you will not allow yourself to get involved in daily decision because you will not have time to manage. As a manager who wants to manage time, wil not allow his subordinate who comes into his office with a problem to waste his time. He can tell him wait for ten minutes. This saves time because, if he stays in his office to settle the problem, the visitor will be in control but it goes to the subordinate office, the manager controls for he can leave at any time phone calling:  a manager can hung him self up at a middle of a sentence, the call will assume that the fault was phone companies faults. We’ve already known what we should do, we‘ve simply lacked the determination or the self discipline to do it.

Time management is a very personal thing. You must select from the dozen’s of suggestions offered and tailor them to your own needs. Mastering time is no task for the faint of heart. If you are among those hardly souls resolved to make the most of the limited time you have to manage your time more effectively. And is you are willing to pay the price then read on some surprise lie ahead.

  • TIME AS A CRITICAL AND UNIQUE RESOUCE:

Most of us sense something else about time. It is a resource moreover it is a unique resource. It cannot be accumulated like money or stock piled like raw material. We are forced to spend it whether we choose to spend it or not and at a fixed rate of 60 seconds every minutes. It cannot be turned on and off like a machine or replace like a man. It is irretrievable as chaplain tyler put it “ time is the most inexorable and inelastic element in our existence. We spend it like other resource. Time is either managed effectively or it is mismanaged. As author and consultant Peter Drucker observed “time is the scarcest resources”  and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed.

Why some companies failed after some years is because
