The population of the study was one hundred and twenty; comprising of both staff and customers of Globacom .The sample size was ninety two and it was determined using the yaro Yamane formula.

The research used both the primary and secondary sources of data in the course of study.

The primary data were collected through the instrument of questionnaire, interviews and observation.

The secondary data were collected from text books, journals, magazines, newspaper and libraries.

The research finding of the project work revealed that social responsibility programmes are necessary .the findings also unveiled that Globacom Nigeria, a telecommunication firm carries out its social responsibility programme in its host community. The researcher recommended that the company should increase and expand its social responsibility programmes. Corporate social responsibility is therefore something that a company should try and get right in implementing. It is something that business today should wholeheartedly be committed to. The danger of ignoring social responsibility is too dangerous.

1.1     INTRODUCTION:

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Corporate Social Responsibility an essentially American phenomenon has over the years become a major concern in Western Europe and in other countries of the world following the western model of development.

According to Drucker, (1986:66).The genesis of the debate on the concept of corporate social responsibility has been traced to the wave of crisis in social values that engulfed America in the post World War II period and most especially in the sixties. The Chief Executive of General Motors who observed the changing trend could not help observing:

“I am concerned about a society that has demonstrably lost confidence in its institutions – in the government, in the press, in the church, in the military, as well as in business”.

Business to America has had a most unique history.  Its development growth and impact on social life in America since the civil war II is almost common knowledge.  What may not be common knowledge, however, is the fact that business which has hitherto shaped and controlled the lives of millions of Americans some two hundred years ago is today being threatened by a wave of protests from various publics it uses to serve.

The crisis of confidence in the social role of business as made explicit in debates on corporate social responsibility points to the fact that America sees big business as a big powerful machine gone out of control.  And efforts to control and at least re-orientate its directions form the core of the argument of all who urge business to change with the times.  In other words, to deemphasize its so much vaunted profit maximization dogma and pay attention to the human lives and environment which it is subtly, ruthlessly and almost surely grinding out of existence.

As one of the protagonists has viewed the concept of corporate social responsibility it is a crude blend of long-run profit-making and altruism, a doctrine which fuses social values with profit maximization goals.

In the early years of the American Republic and especially in the post civil war reconstruction era, business in America played an almost indispensable role as a powerful social tool for harnessing resources and ensuring material progress. Ducker (1986:66). But as the years rolled on and business began to concentrate and centralize capital, its role in the economy became expansive and pervasive.  At the height of prosperity, the captains of industry were heralded as heroes of the society.

The later years of the post World War II era harbored a different story.  The boom period following the end of World War II soon gave way to a periodic wave of depressions and crisis that was to rock every foundations of society on which business existed.  The  frustrating economic situation characterized by inflation, unemployment, failing profit, declining investment, pollution of the external environment etc., pushed Americans to re-examine almost every old values and the assumptions behind them.

According to Drucker, (1986:96) the debate on corporate social responsibility did not only take place in the United State of America.  The noise of the debate filtered through to other countries that shares similar business cultures with America most especially the Western European countries.  While the western European nations have responded positively to the debate, accepted and even implemented some of its own far reaching conclusions it is pertinent to know if the discussions and conclusion so far reached have had an impact on the countries  periphery.

One of the objectives of this study is to investigate to what extent the current debate on corporate social responsibility and its conclusion has trickled down to the periphery of Nigeria in particular and how it is applied here by firms who

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

The growing globalization of business and increasing competition and technological advancement has led to an increasing need to change organizational polices and strategies (Hampel and Martinsons, 2009). The pace of challenges is increasing and thus organizational change is considered unavoidable (Drucker, 1999).

Organizational change is the continuous process of aligning an organization with its market place and doing it more responsively and effectively than competitors. Thus, organizational change management is a continuous process of experiment and adaptation aimed at matching organizational capabilities to the needs and dictates of a dynamic business environment Rogers (1995).

As such, in a highly competitive environment, organizational change becomes indispensable for greater success and excellence. This is due to the dynamism of the internal and external business environment. But inspite of the importance of change management to organization success, employees in most organization resist change, sequel to wrong perception and their in ability to adapt to new development and shifting from their current point. As such, organizational scholars have long  acknowledge the importance of communication strategy in explanation of organizational change in order to clearly communicate in advance, the short and long term effect as well as the benefits and short comings of such change management. This is in order to avoid potential loss that could arise from cynicism in certain group of employees and consequently change resistance Langham (1996).

In organization, most problems and challenges are generated by competition, advance technology, mergers, expansion, product quality maintenance, or enhancing employee efficiency on the one hand and rapid growth, new business venture, exciting opportunities, innovation, and new leadership and management approaches on the other (Madsen et al, 2005). To overcome these challenges, organizations are often under pressure for survival and stay competitive in future. In such adverse environment, employee attitude and behavior to accept organizational change is considered important for management and change agents for successful organizational change. This is sequel to the way in which most employee resist change from the onset,

Hence the need to use communication to inform and educate employee on such organizational change before it commences.

It is against this background that the researcher sees the subject matter “The effect of communication on employee’s perception to change in an organization” worthy of being investigated through this survey.

1.2     Statement of the problem

Organizational is basically confronted with issue of change resistance by employee. This has been a big challenge as well as impediment to management of organization during such period. This is attributed to constraints arising from the inability of management to communicate such change in advance through effective communication before implementation. Communication problems are common place when change are not clearly identified Lewis (2007). Not only do they cause a drain on profitability, but also the effectiveness of management declines. In the work of Dawson (2006), he opined that there are many underlying reasons why communication often falls short of the ideas, which are “accuracy, reliability, validity, adequacy and effectives,” are addressed with some general issues within the relationship between information and communication in organizations.

Lewis (2007)’s research findings, the most frequently noted categories of problem encountered by the company in transition are “communicating vision” and negative attitudes”. If an organization’s management does not consider which communication behaviours, it wishes to foster for its success, the signals it sends to employees may be inconsistent or counterproductive.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has become a key component of the structural reform process and globalization strategy in many economies. Several developing and transition economies have embarked on extensive privatization and commercialization programmes in the last one and a half decades or so, as a means of fostering economic growth, attaining macroeconomic stability, and reducing public sector borrowing requirements arising from corruption, subsidies and subventions to unprofitable SOEs. By the end of 1996, all but five countries in Africa had divested some public enterprises within the framework of macroeconomic reform and liberalization (White and Bhatia, 1998).

In line with the trend worldwide, the spate of empirical works on privatization has also increased, albeit with a microeconomic orientation that emphasizes efficiency gains (La Porta and López-de-Silanes, 1997; D’Souza and Megginson, 1999; Boubakri and Cosset, 1998; Dewenter and Malatesta, 2001). Yet despite the upsurge in research, our empirical knowledge of the privatization programme in Africa is limited. Aside from theoretical predictions, not much is known about the process and outcome of privatization exercises in Africa in spite of the impressive level of activism in its implementation.

Current research is yet to provide useful insights into the peculiar circumstances of Africa, such as the presence of embryonic financial markets and weak regulatory institutions and the manner in which they influence the pace and outcome of privatization efforts. Most objective observers agree, however, that the high expectations of the 1980s about the “magical power” of privatization bailing Africa out of its quagmire remain unrealized (Adam et al., 1992; World Bank, 1995; Ariyo and Jerome, 1999; Jerome, 2005).

As in most developing countries, Nigeria until recently witnessed the growing involvement of the state in economic activities. The expansion of SOEs into diverse economic activities was viewed as an important strategy for fostering rapid economic growth and development. This view was reinforced by massive foreign exchange earnings from crude oil, which fuelled unbridled Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) investment in public enterprises. Unfortunately, most of the enterprises were poorly conceived and economically inefficient. They accumulated huge financial losses and absorbed a disproportionate share of domestic credit. By l985, they had become an unsustainable burden on the budget.

With the adoption of the structural adjustment programme (SAP) in 1986, privatization of public enterprises came to the forefront as a major component of Nigeria’s economic reform process at the behest of the World Bank and other international organizations

1.1.1  HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF POWER HOLDING COMPANY           NIGERIA

A major energy product which has emerged from the development of Nigeria’s energy resources is electricity. Although at independence in 1960 the country inherited a rudimentary electric power generation and distribution system under the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) and later changed to NEPA.

Nigeria’s Electric Grid is being run on hydroelectric and thermal plants. The former are predominantly utilized in the northern part of Nigeria while the later which are fueled by petroleum appear to be largely favoured in the southern parts. The disadvantages of these approaches become evident in the harmattan seasons when the water level drops and in the chronic spate of fuel scarcity.

Nigeria has about 5,900MW of installed electric generating capacity consisting of 3 hydro-based stations and 5 thermal power plants. Nigeria faces a serious energy crisis due to declining electricity generation from the power plants. Power outages are frequent and the power sector

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

  • GENERAL BACKGROUND OF THE SUBJECT MATTER

Standard trust bank Plc commenced operation in August 1997 as a commercial bank with five business offices driven by a board of directors a management team and staff focused on revolutionizing the Nigerian banking industry following  the resolution of the board of directors at an extra ordinary general meeting on 19th July 2002 the bank became  a public limited company (PLC), from the humble beginning, they have been able to record modest achievements, which makes  them today one of the leading banks in Nigeria.

Standard trust bank remains one of the most stable and consistently growing banks in the country. Efficient assets actualization and Management resulted in the growth of balance sheet size from N984 million in 1997 to N21,343 billion in 1990 and N9,945 billion by the end of 2001/2001 financial year. The ban k has a full range of banking services and products provided to delight their customers. They include personal/corporate savings account standard care account, personal/corporate current account Domiciliary account standard flexi-fixed account and so in any business outfit, be it government or privates beyond, the moment of decision taking presents challenges to the executives.

Decision taking is a life wire of any organization as the future growth of the enterprise depends largely on the soundness and unsoundness of such decisions, for the banking sector in particular; the importance of valid decision in enhancing its growth and profitability cannot be over stretched. The banking industry in Nigeria is in a state of chaos.

Most of the banks are classified as distressed, some of them have been liquidated while some are ordered to recapitalize or face liquidation. The dangerous trend in the banking industry has sent a disturbing wave to the national economy. In a rapid reaction to salvage the banking industry and save the economy from collapses the government enacted the failed and established a tribunal to try the forever decision makers and takers in the banks who have contribute to the banks failure.

The utilization of management information system on banks lending decisions will make a lot of impact in enhancing banking growth and productivity. The usefulness of the management information cannot be restricted to the lending banks. Osisionma (1990) classified management information into three parts, which include store-keeping information, attention directing information and problem solving information. Management information contain such details as regard banks financial standing and long term viability, some of the ways banks lend money are through banks overdraft and other advances it can make to various categories of its customers. Before banks lend money they are interested in the ability of their ability to refund the loan at the appropriate time.

Management information is indispensable in granting such loan, overdraft and other advances also in monitoring the realized of the disbursed funds. Before the decision is reached management information should be sought for the choices as well as the outcome of the possible decision. Having critically estimated cost of each alternative and bearing in mind that the major aim of banks is maximizing profit, the management of the bank use the  data and basis, provided in management information in taking decision that is in line with the goals of the organization.

Management information represents the real life situation of the banks, which cannot be ignored in lending. It is very useful in planning, co-coordinating. It is very useful in planning, coordination and control. Moreover, with management information every lending decision will be based on data that have first of all to be selected, collected, verified and subsequently utilized for growth, profitability and viability of the bank.

  • PROBLEMS ASSOCIATE WITH THE SUBJECT MATTER

Recent development in the banking industry in Nigeria has shown that most of the bank management and decision takers have grossly violate in their operation. Most affected in the violation is the banking regulation the misuse, abuse and total neglect of management information in bank lending decision.

Because of the importance of management information in enhancing banks growth and

ABSTRACT

“The Impact of Apprenticeship on the Development of Manpower Needs in Nigeria” underscores greater number of points which needed to be grasped.

In reality, during this work, a look is taken to correct bad impression and misconception problem that apprenticeship programme is meant for the illiterates. It is against this background that extensive discussion is made on the formal apprenticeship system. The in-plant or in-house training programme is a worthwhile venture which almost every company and institution embark upon so as to meet the new demands, new problems and new challenges. Also, on-the-job training. A conjectural hypothesis is also formulated to identify, ascertain and analyse research problems and means devised to test it is Chi-square which determines the association between nominal variables.

Meanwhile, the research approach or method investigation applied is face to face interaction with the personalities concerned that is through interviews, instrument used is structured questionnaire and this is made possible by a letter of introduction from the Head of Department.

On the other hand, the major findings are based on the fact that theory and practice are indispensable. The two must go hand in hand to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. The major purpose of training and development do cause a change in employee, trainee or apprentice behaviour on job and ultimately improves the effectiveness of the organization / company / institution. Growth and individual career objectives are achieved through effective training and apprentice can therefore reach their potentials without much ado.

On a very serious note, Nigeria government should restructure the curriculum of the apprenticeship system through some of its programmes.

National Manpower Board (NMB) should be reactivated and allowed to fully utilize its responsibilities.

Then the final research report is highly formalized and cuts across every sphere of ones life.

INTRODUCTION.

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY.

Let it be pointed out that the full research report on the topic under discussion would show how apprenticeship system and manpower needs contribute to Nigerian economy.

Again, an in-depth look has been taken to explore and identify whether the topic is research worthy and consequently to meet up with the challenges of time. Once more, the trend of business, economy, politic, technology and other special values of expertise in various fields of endeavour cannot be kept in isolation.

Therefore, several attempts should be made to write in detail some of the activities been embarked upon by different organizations, institutions, corporate bodies and what have we. They contribute immensely in the development of apprenticeship of manpower needs in Nigeria. This contribution would be found out in the course of research work.

It is against this and more background that this work might be made a daily companion by researching students, scholars, entrepreneurs and trainees.

In a nutshell, one is expected to know how the impact of apprenticeship development of manpower needs were to apprentices; be encouraged and welcomed by Nigerian Citizens. Some of the trends enumerated above would be a thing of past. Later all, the essence of acquiring knowledge is to impart it to one another.

It means that putting interest on this apprenticeship system would in no doubt be of great advantage to the government and populace who are desirous to make both ends meet. At a time, non-challant attitude of some people under the illusion that apprenticeship system is meant for the illiterates or people of low status should henceforth disillusioned. In large, apprentice does not mean those who did not know how to read and write but the literate ones. This will later be discussed in detail in the subsequent chapter.

To this end, the easiest way forward to achieve and maintain the impact of apprenticeship and its manpower needs is by all and sundry placing hands on deck, not to be seen in a wrong perspective to be of great importance to certain individuals but of a mutual advantage of all. Even if you are not an apprentice, it should never be discouraged.

We than God that n the contemporary institutions of higher learning that apprenticeship system is encouraged in the course termed “Entrepreneurial Development”

Lastly, to cope with the new demands, new problems and new challenges.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.

One should not fail to acknowledge some of the specific aspects which give the researcher a great concern during the course of this research. To buttress up points, as it is often said in research methodology, be it in business, education, political science, to mention but a few that; “A problem well defined is half-solved”. Let it be made clear that there are many of them but the prominent ones would be given rapt attention.

It is however imperative to note that this research topic is believed to be varying or changing in nature. The question is why is it so? In this light, programmes undertaken in the name of apprenticeship scheme are numerous,
