ABSTRACT

In account form analysis, a lot of discrepancies causes by manual aspect of the form such as: lost of form, inability to correct intakes, poor storage facilities have been a problem in the May fresh savings and loan limited account form. But in recent times, the computer has come to the aid of our banks, May fresh in particular.

The introduction of computer into the banking operation has to a great extent affected the mode of operation of banks in diverse ways. Computer has touched almost every application area in Banking such as: Savings account, current accounts, bank expenditure, fixed deposit, staff salary, incomes to the banks etc.

This work studies also t he procedure involved in taking proper account of information appraisal in the banks i.e being able to record customers’ information such as; Name, Address/Business, Address, Occupation, Age, Sex, Next of Kins, Address of kin, Signature, Date, Initial deposit, Passport etc. The design and implementation of window based from desk information system is to enhance the mode of operation or rather to keep proper storage of the information’s supplied by the new customers of the bank. With the computerized form of it, no much stress in writing down the information supplied by the customer and stores it in a database such that whenever reference is required, you can easily retrieve the particular information and make necessary use of it. The computerized software is very comprehensive and reliable if implemented.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Bank customers deposit money in the bank in form of saving, current and fixed deposit account.

(i)      SAVINGS ACCOUNT:

In this type of bank account, banks allow an individual to open an account with little amount of money ranging from N1000.00 upwards. Savings accounts are used and issued with banks passbooks when all record concerning the deposits and withdrawals made by the customer will be stated. Only individual owners are permitted to withdraw money from this account. The banks pay interest for any balance left in this account. Withdrawing can be made without prior notice.

(ii)     CURRENT ACCOUNT:

This type of bank account can be opened if a customer wishes to make payment by means of cheque. The holders are issued with cheque book which they use in withdrawing money from their accounts. The cheque is also used when a debtor wants to order the bank to pay his credit or on his behalf. The customer is also issued with the paying in slip to enable him deposit money in his account.

The software provides adequate and accurate records of any information-supplied by the customer and store it in a database such that whenever reference is require, you can easily retrieve the particular information and make necessary use of it. The computerized software is very comprehensive and reliable it implemented.

(iii)    FIXED DEPOSIT ACCOUNT:

This is sometimes called time deposit account and people who have surplus money to keep for upwards from six months. Agreement is reached between the customer and his banker during which the customer will not withdraw money from his account until the fixed data. If for any reason, the customer wants to withdraw money from his account until the fixed date. If any reason, the customer wants to withdraw money from the account before the fixed date or period, the banker will subject the customer to the payment of a penalty known as surcharge. The customer who waits for the expiration of the fixed period is entitled to a high rate interest.

The bank opens a ledger for the customer and a general cashbook for deposit, payments and withdrawals. When money is deposited, the bank debits its cashbook and credits the customer with the amount deposited. The bank will at the end of the month or when requested by the customer sends out a bank statement which gives a copy of the customers account and as if appears in the bank’s books. It should be that the balance shown in the bank statement should be exactly the same as the balance shown in the customer’s cashbook kept by him but in actual practice, they seldom agree the reason is that one or both is not up to date.

Account reconciliation could simply be defined as a means by which the differences that exist between a bank statements sent to a customer and the cash book kept by him are reconciled. This is achieved by what is known as the bank reconciliation statement. The role of computer to every works of life has been a great relief to human endeavour the rapid growth of computers has been spread to every profession. The banking profession is not an exception.

The introduction of computer into banks has to a large extent promoted our live in many ways and will continue to do so, perhaps an even greater extent, computer has touched almost every field such as medical, legal, engineering, architecture, secretarial  activities, banking system is outstanding computer has lessened the problem normally procured in banking operation. For instance, in file handling expenses calculation, income account preparation, good working condition etc.

Banking operation was made automatic, easy and timely, you find out that you can pay in your money to your account at any cashier stand and collect some money as many times as possible from any cashier stand, if you have many cashiers. This is possible because once you pay in your money, the networked computer to various cashier and the server computer will play a great impart in helping the cashier to retrieve your information or account. When this is done, the changes you have made, debit and credit will be reflected immediately. This will help the cashier to easily update your account record. With this networked system of account can easily withdrawn many times without wasting anytime.

In front desk information system where this study centers on, computer has actually proved the edge on every other technological invention. The introduction of computer in this area has made the job procedures very interesting and enjoying. A lot of discrepancies caused by the mammal account from system are totally eliminated by the introduction is accurately and easily updated automatically, manipulated and maintained by the computerized system. Banks enjoys this new mention because you can easily handle information form the customers. The information can be stored in backup tape and kept in a good confinement. So, the problem of keeping and dumping lots of document will be limited.

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The primary aim of this research is to develop a new computerized system that will effectively carryout the operations of information requirement of the bank, promote and enhance the mode of the bank, with the human intervention. It was also aimed at providing opportunity for handling many customers at a time.

The objective of the study includes:

  • To promote easy correction of data
  • To avoid unnecessary dumping of papers
  • To create good business atmosphere
  • To reduce the expenditure of the ban
  • To portray the capabilities of the computer system in the area of this study
  • To tender proper account and units

ABSTRACT

The degree to which computer is used in offices has been of serious concern to secretarial profession. This study investigated the impact of the introduction of the computer on the secretarial profession and how the secretarial react to the introduction of computer.

In order to arrive at a conclusive decision on the above objective, the researcher carried out a library research, interviews and questionnaires.

The populations of this study consisted of hundred secretaries in some selected banking institutions namely; First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Okpara Avenue, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Uwani and Abakpa Nike  Community Banking Limited. Questionnaire and Oral interview were used to collect data.

The statistical tools used are average and percentage. When the data was analyzed, it was found that secretaries do not react adversely to the introduction of computer in their offices, computer have created new skills for the secretary and have added some spices to their work. With the acquisition of such skills, secretaries are now seen as indispensable tool in the office, thus giving them good professional status. And it was recommended that secretaries should develop attitudes and learning skills that would enable them to take advantage of new opportunity.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Today, the business world  is  undergoing  far-reaching

Technological revolution due to  the  advancement  in  science. For all types of organizations to  succeed  in  today’s  rapidly  changing environment, they  need  to  be  able  to  be  process  data   and information  effectively.

In conducting them  day  to day  operations  organization  use  information  for  functions  such  as  planning, controlling, directing,  organizing  and  diction  making.   Information therefore  is  unique actionably  a critical  resources  in  the  operations  of  all  organization  the  business men,  secretaries, students and  in  fact  everybody, would now readily see the indelible impact of modern technology on people lives.

In an organization, information moves from person, forms are completed, filed and received and individuals communicate variety of both simple and complex concepts. At the turn of the century most written information were complied by hand in pen and ink copies were made by hand and communicated was by letter, telegraph or in person.  Today most of the tedious functions related to information handling and processing are done through the computer.

For the secretaries, not only have their equipment changed, but also their administrative processes office routine management systems are similarly evolving into new forms.  Computers have replaced manual typewriters and electric typewriter while for machines replaced telex machines.  There are also different type of advanced communication gadget such as cellular phones, pager etc.  With this radical change, the secretaries are expected to change and be able to keep up with all these professional changes around them.  In accordance with the law of motion CHANGE is a constant phenomena.  If we look at the beginning of man to the present day, we would see that there had been tremendous change. If there had not occurred, man would have remained primitive hill today.  Change is a challenge and if we abide by change, it brings out the best in us thereby leading to erroneous progress.

The first office automatic machine were introduced 1930 and used paper rolls later paper tape as a form of memory.  BY the 1960s the international business machine (IBM) had introduced the selective go If ball typewriter which allows the typist to change the print element, the go If – ball to provide a different type font (character design and sign) another break through was the introduction of IBM’s magnetic tape selective typewriter.  This was followed by the introduction of a visual display unit (VDU) this allows the typist to see what I happening to the text as if being tyed amended and stored, but before it I being committed to paper or printed out.  In fact, electronic systems are now possible that they can sense absorbs store, categorize ponder, very high quantity.  Yet with greater accuracy, speed and reliability.  Coventry, (1981) indicated that Recent development of the micro processor, founded on the silicon chips has potentials likely to have a vast social repercussion through out financial industry, for a simple chip take over a high proportion of today’s office job P.21.  When we refer to computer system, we refer to information and communication system which are necessary for the functioning of the office.  We assume that data processing and word-processing play a large role and also that human system under lie these technical systems.  In an ideal situation therefore, the technology and the people function together harmoniously.

It is important to recognize that development and implementation of the computer is moving through several overlapping phases, each affecting differently.

In general, a distinction can be made between two classes of office workers.  The first are the information worker they are those who are involved in the routine entry, recording, storage and transmission of information, those who fall under this group of worker include – Typist, secretaries, clerks and data entry personal.

The second group are the knowledge works-this group aconite of those worker who create, interpret, analyze and utilize this information these knowledge worker can be divided into two (2) groups professional/technical employees and managers.

The main impact of the computer is simply to facilitate office operation as they are now being carried out.  For example the word professor replace the secretary’s type writers, the mini-computer replaces the clerk’s filing cabinets etc.  More recently professionals and secretaries have begun using personal computers and sophisticated calculators to speed up their work.  The timing of there development has largely been dictated by the emergence of the technology starting with the widespread introduction of word processor’s in the 1970’s, and it in the late 1970s and its legitimating as a business tool in 1981, with the introduction of the IBM P.C.

1.2            STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Up to the 190’s the use of the computer in this country was limited to very few multinational companies.  The secretary then had to contend with using manual and electric typewriters in performing her word processing function.

Furthermore storage and retrieval of information was by use of files, filing cabinets, index cards etc.  Accessing of other information had to be through telephone directories and other relevant specialized text meant for such purpose.

Many of the secretaries of the 80’s are still in employment. With the advent and widespread use of the computer are then wonders how these secretaries are adjusting to be new devices now prevalent in modern offices are they finding it easy or difficult?  Is the profession generally under threat by the introduction of the computer and the Internet?  What can be done to keep the secretary still relevant in to day’s modern business setting?  These and many more are what this research aims to find solutions for.

1.3            PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to thoroughly investigate on the impact of the introduction of the computer on the secretaries.

  1. How secretaries react or the attitude of secretaries towards the introduction of computers.
  2. To ascertain whether the introduction of computer has in any way improve the secretary’s work.
  3. To ascertain whether the introduction of computer has made it easy or difficult to adjust (especially the secretaries of the bank under investigation).
  4. To determine the problems encountered by secretaries in trying to adapt to changes in the nature of their work.
  5. To find out whether or not secretaries are involved in the planning and introduction of computers.

1.4            RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research provided answers to the following research questions;

  1. How do secretaries react to the introduction of computer
  2. What problems are encountered by secretaries in trying to adapt to changes in the nature of their work.
  3. Are there orientation programmes in facilitating the adaptation to new changes of work
  4. Are secretaries involved in the planning and introduction of computers.

Abstract

Hostels provide budget oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available. Hostels are generally cheaper for both the operator and the occupants; many hostels have long-term residents whom they employ as desk clerks or housekeeping staff in exchange for free accommodation.
In a few countries, such as the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, India, Nigeria and Australia, the word hostel sometimes also refers to establishments providing longer-term accommodation (often to specific classes of clientele such as nurses, students, drug addicts, court defendants on bail) where the hostels are sometimes run by Housing Associations and charities. In the rest of the world, the word hostel refers only to properties offering shared accommodation to travellers, students or backpackers.
In this research work “Computerized hostel allocation system”, a system will be design to manage a database for allocating hostel to students. The system designed will keep track of all the available rooms, their occupants and fund generated from hostel fee. The new system will be implemented using Visual basic 6.0 and access database.

Chapter One
Introduction

    • Background of the Study

In 1912, in Altena Castle in Germany, Richard Schirrmann created the first permanent Jugendherberge or “Youth Hostel”. These first Youth Hostels were an exponent of the ideology of the German Youth Movement to let poor city youngsters breathe fresh air outdoors. The youths were supposed to manage the hostel themselves as much as possible, doing chores to keep the costs down and build character as well as being physically active outdoors. Because of this, many Youth Hostels closed during the middle part of the day. Very few hostels still require chores beyond washing up after self-catered meals or have a “lockout”.
There are several differences between hostels and hotels, including:

  • Hostels tend to be budget-oriented; rates are considerably lower, and many hostels have programs to share books, DVDs and other items.
  • For those who prefer an informal environment, hostels do not usually have the same level of formality as hotels.
  • For those who prefer to socialize with their fellow guests, hostels usually have more common areas and opportunities to socialize. The dormitory aspect of hostels also increases the social factor

Hostels are generally self-catering. There is less privacy in a hostel than in a hotel. Sharing sleeping accommodation in a dormitory is very different from staying in a private room in a hotel or bed and breakfast, and might not be comfortable for those requiring more privacy. The lessened privacy is also an advantage in some ways, because it encourages more social interaction between guests.
Theft can be a problem, since guests may share a common living space, but this can be avoided by securing guests’ belongings. Most hostels offer some sort of system for safely storing valuables, and an increasing number of hostels offer private lockers.
Noise can make sleeping difficult on occasions, whether from snoring, sexual activity, someone either returning late or leaving early or the proximity of so many people. This can be mitigated by carrying earplugs.

1.2     Statement of the Problem
The growing number of students in higher institutions all over the world has posed a lot of accommodation problem on the part of students and school management. Students at the beginning of each session waste half of the semester looking for accommodation. The few hostels that exist in the universities are not properly managed. Infrastructural decay, dirty environment and lack of basic amenities are some of the numerous problems encountered almost in every hostel at the university. Statistics of the number of rooms required to match the growing number of students are far fetched. Most often, students pay for hostel fee and end up not getting one due to lack of bed space. Hostel administrators can not give accurate information of the occupancy of a particular room. This and many more forms the statement of the problem that necessitated for this research work.

ABSTRACT
In hospitals, test analysis is conducted to find out the disease that is affecting the patients. For sickle cell disease, it is a genetic disease and needs a methodological test analysis.
This study is carried out to design and implement a computerized system for the methodological test analysis as a tool to revolutionize medical profession.  It was principally a case study of sickle cell disease. This will help to reduce the problems inherent in our hospitals today with regard to conducting medical test and obtaining accurate test result.
The programming language employed in the implementation of this research work is visual Basic 6.0.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study
This collection of clinical findings was unknown until the explanation of the sickle cells in 1910 by the Chicago cardiologist and professor of medicine James B. Herrick (1861–1954), whose intern Ernest Edward Irons (1877–1959) found “peculiar elongated and sickle-shaped” cells in the blood of Walter Clement Noel, a 20-year-old first-year dental student from Grenada, after Noel was admitted to the Chicago Presbyterian Hospital in December 1904 suffering from anaemia.

Noel was readmitted several times over the next three years for “muscular rheumatism” and “bilious attacks”. Noel completed his studies and returned to the capital of Grenada (St. George’s) to practice dentistry. He died of pneumonia in 1916 and is buried in the Catholic cemetery at Sauteurs in the north of Grenada. Herrick’s published account included illustrations, but the earliest available slide showing sickle cells is that of a 1918 autopsy from a soldier with sickle trait, initially reviewed only 92 years later.

The disease was named “sickle-cell anemia” by Verne Mason in 1922, then a medical resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital. However, some elements of the disease had been recognized earlier: A paper in the Southern Journal of Medical Pharmacology in 1846 described the absence of a spleen in the autopsy of a runaway slave. The African medical literature reported this condition in the 1870s, when it was known locally as ogbanjes (“children who come and go”) because of the very high infant mortality rate caused by this condition. A history of the condition tracked reports back to 1670 in one Ghanaian family. Also, the practice of using tar soap to cover blemishes caused by sickle-cell sores was prevalent in the black community.

Linus Pauling and colleagues were the first, in 1949, to demonstrate that sickle-cell disease occurs as a result of an abnormality in the haemoglobin molecule. This was the first time a genetic disease was linked to a mutation of a specific protein, a milestone in the history of molecular biology, and it was published in their paper “Sickle Cell Anemia, a Molecular Disease”.

1.2     Statement of the Problem
Sickle-cell conditions are inherited from parents in much the same way as blood type, hair color and texture, eye colour, and other physical traits. The types of haemoglobin a person makes in the red blood cells depend on what haemoglobin genes are inherited from his parents. If one parent has sickle-cell anaemia (SS) and the other has sickle-cell trait then there is a 50% chance of a child’s having sickle-cell disease and a 50% chance of a child’s having sickle-cell trait. When both parents have sickle-cell trait a child has a 25% chance of sickle-cell disease. So, there is need to prevent both partners having sickel cell from getting married as this will result in bearing children with sickle cell trait. Therefore, there is need to develop a methodological test analysis to determine the possibility of parents having children with sickle cell trait.
