ABSTRACT,

Car fault detection is a complicated process and requires high level of expertise. Any attempt of developing an expert system dealing with car fault detection has to overcome various difficulties. This project describes a proposed knowledge-based system for car fault detection. The project explains the need for an expert system and the some issues on developing knowledge-based systems, the car fault detection process and the difficulties involved in developing the system. The system structure and its components and their functions are described. The system has some rules for different types of faults and causes. It can detect many types of faults. The system has been tested and gave promising results. The programming language employed in this work was visual Basic 6.0.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background of the Study

Expert systems (ES) are a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), and were developed by the AI community in the mid-1960s. An expert system can be defined as “an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solutions”. We can infer from this definition that expertise can be transferred from a human to a computer and then stored in the computer in a suitable form that users can call upon the computer for specific advice as needed. Then the system can make inferences and arrive at a specific conclusion to give advices and explains, if necessary, the logic behind the advice. ES provide powerful and flexible means for obtaining solutions to a variety of problems that often cannot be dealt with by other, more traditional and orthodox methods. The terms expert system and knowledge-based system (KBS) are often used synonymously. The four main components of KBS are: a knowledge base, an inference engine, a knowledge engineering tool, and a specific user interface. Some of KBS important applications include the following: medical treatment, engineering failure analysis, decision support, knowledge representation, climate forecasting, decision making and learning, and chemical process controlling. Previous work has shown that systems concerned with car fault detection were very limited. Jeff Pepper (1990) has described a proposed expert system for car fault diagnosis called SBDS, the Service Bay Diagnostic System. SBDS is being developed by a joint project team at Ford Motor Company, the Carnegie Group, and Hewlett Packard. SBDS’s knowledge base will contain the expertise of Ford’s top diagnosticians, and it will make their diagnostic skills available to mechanics in every Ford dealership in North America. This system will guide a human technician through the entire service process, from the initial customer interview at the service desk to the diagnosis and repair of the car in the garage.

There are a lot of related expert systems in the literature concerned with diagnostic problems. Daoliang et al. presents a web-based expert system for fish disease diagnosis. The system is now is use by fish farmers in the North China region. Yu Qian et al. proposed an expert system for real-time failure diagnosis of complex chemical processes.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

The proposed system divides car failures into three major types:

  1. Start-up state, problems that may occur when a person try to start up the car, for example; engine does not work, some sounds noticed, engine works ones and stops. These problems could be due to one or more failures; will happen, the battery needs to be recharged, the dynamo is dead, or the battery is dead.
  2. Run-stable state, problems that may occur after starting the car, for example; unburned fuel, cycle on-off, blue gas emitted.
  3. Movement-state, problems that may occur while the car is moving; this state also includes problems related to the brake system. Most of movement problems that might occur appears on the car’s tableau the proposed system takes advantage of these facilities and use them to diagnose the problem and to gives advice of the solution to the driver. Some of these problems are: oil pressure, water temperature, voltage, and fuel pointer.

1.3       Objectives of the Project

The main objective of the research is to develop Car Failure and Malfunction Diagnosis Assistance System. The aim of the proposed system is to provide quick and precise expert guidance to car fault diagnosis. Additionally, for training purposes, it helps in reducing the knowledge gap between different individuals in car fault diagnosis. The specific objectives of the research are as follows:

  • To investigate the related works on car fault and malfunction diagnosis and Expert System (ES) domains.
  • To design appropriate representation architecture to the proposed Car Failure and Malfunction Diagnosis Assistance System.
  • To develop an ES that supports the implementation of the proposed system’s functionality.
  • To test and validate the system’s performance.

1.4       Scope of the Project

The scope of the project covers the following:

  • Repairs of  Minor Faults in cars
  • Detecting the Cause of the problem
  • Suggest how to repair the car

1.5    Justification of the Project

Expert system is extensive computer programs capable of simulating the decisive activity of the experts in solving very complicated task which are rather strictly problem oriented.

Generally, the proposed system can help inexperienced mechanic or driver in diagnosing the fault of the car. In addition, the system has the following benefit:

1.       Prevent the loss of customer and income. If mechanic’s repair shop                   makes a wrong diagnosis, the customer will be reluctant to come        back to the repair shop. With this system, the situation can be avoided.

2.       As a tool for training inexperienced mechanic.

3.       Improve productivity. Having this system may allow mechanic to do       more work in less time.

4.       Help improving knowledge driver in diagnosing the fault of car.

5.       Reduce the need for skilled mechanic. The repair of car requires a   high level of expertise. With this system, inexperienced mechanic can        be guided to find the fault.

6.       Be able to work without stopping. As a human, expert mechanic will       be tired if he works continuously.

1.6      Limitations

This project covers all aspect of expert system on car fault detection and correction. Due to time and financial constraint, the software developed was tested using few types of car fault..

INTRODUCTION

The diverse sectors of the economy are fast growing for which the medical and health care professions are no exceptions. Being that these professions are in the increase day-by-day and they are lots of jobs done just to improve the services rendered to patients that visits the hospital, the need for the application of computers in this particular profession should not be overemphasized.

In fact, apart from food and national defiance, we spend more money on medical and health-care services than on any other single services since “Health is wealth” and we as patients expects the very best from our Doctors. All these expectations have been in place ever before but are more realistic today. Perhaps, the most significant factor effecting this shift lies in the eventual development of computers.

Computerization is the use of computers and computerized devices factories, offices and other working places to perform automatically tasks previously done by human beings. This computer – based system is of great importance to the growth and survival of the various sectors of the government especially in Hospital where lives are saved.

It is therefore, the aim of this project work to introduce. The computer-based information system in Hospital administration and record system. The principal reason for the introduction of computer in this project id to improved patient case through patient medical records keeping and this is achieved through computerization. ESUT TEACHING HOSPITAL ENUGU as the case study of this project work. The project will examine and investigate the already existing method of manual processing of medical records in this Hospital. The projects work will also suggest the most modern method of records system for the overall administration of the Hospital.

1.1     HOSPITAL BACKGROUND OF THE CASE STUDY

Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUT TEACHING HOSPITAL ENUGU) ESUT Teaching Hospital Enugu which the case study of this project came into existence on the 25 day of August 2004, through the effort of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, who established. The hospital provide qualitative Health care services but maintains that they do not just heal mere physical illness which attacks the human body, but a much deeper and holistic healing of the entire human person. Therefore ESUT Teaching Hospital is not just and “Ordinary” Hospital where patients come to receive medical treatment to heal their ailing body only.

The diverse nature of the cases treated by the hospital, coupled with the fact that they consistent effort they make to develop their service areas and acceptable standard. These service areas include all the wards (medical and surgical for male and female, pediatrics, chest unit and the maternity section as a whole. Other departments are out patient department (OPD), laboratory department, pharmacy department, central sterding and supply department (C.S.S.D) X-RAY department community medicine and the mobile clinic, theatre department. The roles of these departments are complementary and depict what they call team-work in patient management, the patient always beings at the center.

The Hospital since its establishment has demonstrated a very keen interest in the staff recruitment and development of highly skilled and very dependable medical and paramedical personnel. Presently, their work force stands at 460.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Many problems are encountered with the manual method of handling files. It is quite unfortunate that ESUT Teaching Hospital. In spite of her large medical service and recognition still keep her records manually.

The problems associated with this manual system include time wastage, ineffective use of statistical Data, Duplication of efforts in records keeping. Delay in decision making, it requires a lot of clerical efforts inability to cope up with daily work load. Slow in responding the queries / enquires, Rodents records. A lot of human mistakes, lack of confidentiality of files and high cost of stationary.

In the light of the above problems, this project is aimed at devising a system that will eradicate these problems and improve

ABSTRACT

This project is solely based on the critical appraisal of the use of computer in result processing. The work has done with the aim of studying all the processes involved in manual processing of students result with a view of developing software that can aid in doing the job whenever the new system is introduced to the relevant department (Computer Science Department). In the course of achieving these objective relevant literatures were reviewed on the subject matter.

Based on the review, various staff under Computer Science Department of Institute of Management and Technology Enugu were marked and used for the purpose of collecting the needed data for the research work.

The methods used during the finding were oral, interviews, observation, document review. It was also done randomly. Based on the data collected the researcher find out that there was much problem encountered using manual result processing, which has been taken care of by the developed software

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Information technology is able to facilitate the revolution of changes, which optimize performance and profitability to institutions, organization and companies because it provides solution to one of the key business barrier that is distance, time and difficulties associated with crossing them or sharing them. Emergency of electronic processing of data and it’s computer technologies has led to the death of bugs, errors and time wasting during processing and computation of student’s result.

Electronics data processing introduced towards the end of 1934’s has brought fundamental dangers in the way, so many things art done, including the topic of this project and so many other things like product advertising, information sharing, on-line computation, electronic data storage, electronic mail exchange, to list but a few.

The computer science department in institute of Management and Technology Enugu is responsible for the processing various departments during examination, right from the inception of this great institution; result processing has been manually processed.  The manual system employed is not very efficient, in that a lot of paper work has to be done which takes a reasonable length of time to prepare. Due to the increasing number of students in computer science department (IMT) Enugu, that has written the examination in the school, results computation of the student’s CGPA has been a very difficult task.

Therefore, because of this problems and errors arising from such a system, a software-computerized result processing system becomes inevitable; the benefits accruable from the computer-based system cannot be over emphasized.

1.1     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Historically, result computation and students data record management in computer science department in the Institute of management and technology Enugu has been affected by several factors based on the current manual processing method used such as:

–        Loss of vital information relating to student result/ records

–        The time and labour involved in the student result computation of CGPA

–        Files and records not properly kept.

–        Miscalculation of students CGPA after graduation.

–        Difficulties involved in searching for a specified record

–        Wrong transcription and mutilations by accident or on purpose

–        Information is very insure and can be accessed by the wrong persons.

–        Insecurity of the result, which can be modified by unauthorized person/or access.

–        Use of filing cabinets makes retrieval of information very difficult.

–         Difficult of data sharing i.e. from HOD’s offices to exams and records.

1.2     PURPOSE OF STUDY

Electronics data processing environment where information is processed using computers system hooked on to a Network is more advantageous. Owing to this, therefore, the purpose of this study is directed towards developing a powerful computer application program that will collapse the short-comings encountered in the student’s result processing and data management in the great department of computer science in the institute of management and technology (IMT) Enugu.

1.3     AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this project is to provide a faster means of reducing some (or all) the problem encountered during result computation and registration of student such as:

–        Errors due to over sight

–        Redundancies in record keeping

–        Errors in computation

–        Difficulties in sharing

–        Money time for duplication

–         Delay in computation

INTRODUCTION
Finance is the life wire of any business organization. It is required for the execution of production, sales and administration of a business operation. As a discipline, finance is concerned with the acquisition and administration of the use of the firms funds as well as profit planning and control financial analysis is inevitable for the effective planning and control of any firm.
To effectively plan for the future, the financial manager should be able to asses the financial position of the firm and relates this to its confronting investment opportunities. Since funds are scarce, financial analysis helps the financial manager to assess the returns on investment accruing from ploughing the firms assets and thereby efficiently allocate resources.
However, financial accounting is the employment of the firms balance sheet and income statement to establish some relationship between one figute and another in order to highlight the strengths and weakness of the concerned business. The balance sheet of a firm is also called the financial position because it shows the position of the business in monetary term at a given point in time while the income statement show how the position depicted by the balance sheet has been attained. The results of financial analysis are normally expressed as financial ratios which could be broadly classified as liquidity, leverage, activity and profit ratio. The suppliers of the firm’s funds and the investing public are usually interested in these ratios. But the nature of interest expressed on the firm determines the ratios to be emphasized by each concerned parts. This implies that different people emphasize on different ratios and as a result financial analysis means different thing to different people.
For instance, creditors are interested on those ratios which measure the ability of the form to service their debts and pay the principal as and when due while the equity owners are interested on the profitability ratios. The financial manager occupies a unique position in the firm as he should be able to computer interpret and explain these ratios to various interest groups in the firm when the firm requires funds from outside sources, the financial manager should be able to use the relevant ratio to convince investors to supply their funds. Also the financial manager should be able to justify the reasonableness of some investment or project being under taken by management before the shareholders.
However, the cost involved in the employment of a financial manager makes it mandatory for small-scale companies to engage the services of a financial consultants. The increased use of high-speed computers in various facets of business should popularize the use of financial ratios in business decision. This is because computer would provide the necessary equipment to handle problems associated with voluminous maze of financial data due to lack of time or more.
This study therefore, aims at the development of a data base for financial statements and a set of programs to computer, store and retrieve various financial ratios for some companies.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS
The Nigeria companies act of 1968 stipulate that all registered companies in Nigeria should file their audited annual balance sheet this will guide the investors in the development of the funds and to provide basis for company taxation. But there are some problems facing the financial accounting of any hotel. These problems includes:-
1. Illegal use of money cards – some managers has taken the privilege of using both credit and debit cards to steal companies money and some do not know how to use this cards thereby causing problems to the hotels.
2. One of the major loopholes of an un-computerized financial accounting system is its ability to fraud a company. This poses a problem to the management of a hotel.
3. Some companies employ inexperienced managers who are not professionals in the field of computing and this will restrict the objectives of the
