CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study on the impact of the school environment on teaching and learning it was carried out in Niger College Junior Secondary School Two in Ugbekun Quarters of Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The teachers and students there were the subject used. The secondary school environment is composed of many factors that influence the students. In this work, attention was be paid to the surrounding in which children learn. This can greatly influence their academic performance, and well being in school. The architecture, layout, décor and facilities of their school all play a vital role in shaping the learning environment yet the importance of this particular aspect of school life can often be over looked.

Most children no matter how well or how poorly they perform in the classroom will at some point complain about the fact that they have to go to school; it might be the hours, the number of days per weeks, their teachers, or even the other students that come under fire, but very often. It’s the school building itself that is the stumbling block. It stands to reason that the better a building looks, the more it inspires the people inside it. Obviously it takes more than a few pretty color to create legions of geniuses but what ever a child academic ability, pleasing surroundings will definitely lead to better attendance, improved concentration and a healthy dose of motivation and self esteem. Its also important for staff to have a good environment, which is adoptable to their day to day professional needs.

Aristotle (1998) also recognized the indispensable functions of education when he stated in his books the claimed that the aims of education should include:

1.           The realization of the capabilities and potential of individual

2.           The development of the body

3.           The training of the appetites, which is character or moral development

4.           The development of the intellect or reason. He further held that none of the above should be emphasized at the expenses of the others.

In line with the above aims and functions of education, the Nigeria government in its 1981 Policy on Education stated that the five main national objective of education are the building of:

i.             Free and democratic society

ii.            A just and egalitarian society

iii.           A united, strong and self reliant nation

iv.          A great and dynamic economy

v.           A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens.

Presently education in Nigeria has not been able to achieve the noble objectives because it is in deep problem. According to Bronfenbrenner (1989), young people need to have adult who are “crazy” about teaching instead, they are driving each other crazy. In these schools, support networks are weak or none existed for both children and teachers. Teacher may resent what they perceive as inadequate encouragement assistance, and resource to do their job. Students may feel that nobody at school knows or cares about them. What can be done to change these schools into caring productive places that children and teacher enjoy coming to every day.

The school effect literature describes numerous factors that may enhance the school environment including effective principal leadership, a safe and orderly setting engaging extra curriculum activities reduction in the size and impersonality of school and education programs designed to fit the unique needs of specific students and school contexts school climate is often as palatable as the weather.

Some schools have warm friendly emblems, while others have a cold for body environment that permute classroom and offices. It seems probable that school and classroom climate would influence student’s performance. A number of schools around the country are still languishing in the Victorian era, with crumbling walls and limited resources. It seems that many school in the twenty first century particularly secondary schools are having to shoehorn modern day teaching and up to date resource into nineteenth century surroundings only a tiny proportion of today’s school have been built since the mid 1970s and with a few generation of children stampeding through their relatively modern facilities, many of these buildings are also edging towards the end of their natural life span.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The magnitude of environment problems on teaching and learning school is very difficult to determine because so many extraneous variables impinges on the teaching skills and learning capabilities of teachers and students in the classroom at different times. The time between school environment and home environment is hard to define and varies from individual to individual.

This study takes a critical look at the impact of school environment at different times on the teaching and learning of teachers and students respectively in secondary schools in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following are research questions stated by the researcher

1.   Do the school environment affect teaching

2.   Does the size of the classroom help the students in their learning?

3.   Good environment does it help staff in delivery of their profession?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Few studies have been carried out in Nigeria like Benin City, Edo State to determine the impact of school environment on the teaching and learning. The main purpose of this study is to compute the impact of the environment on teaching and learning on teacher and pupils respectively. Also to acquaint the school management of the danger of degraded and noisy environment on the performance of both teacher and students. Lastly, to consider the implication of the finding for developing school curriculum by school administrators and educators planners.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study is that it will serve as a literature for further research students and researchers for curriculum planners it will be a lay down procedure for them in carrying out their research work and plans. Another importance of this research is that it serves as a documentation of facts for historical purpose and records

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is man’s fundamental method of reform and progress. It can be regarded as the tool with which society brings the transmission of its own culture.

Reomer (1981) refers to education as “all those experiences of the individual through which knowledge is acquired, the intellect enlightened or the will strengthened “ while Unachuka (1989) defines education as “ the process by which individuals are assisted formally or informally, though proper direction and finance, to develop their capacity for their own benefit and that of the society.

Education can therefore be regarded as a social process whose purpose is to bring about certain desirable behavioral change in the total development of the individual. In the whole world education has been given more regard while in Nigeria particularly education has been seen as the main vehicle for rapid development.

It is obvious that since advent of the Europeans, Nigerians have attached much importance to western education. The first type of schools according to Bab Fafunwa (2001) were the Islamic and Arabic schools which emerged as a result of the Islamic Scholars arrival into the country on the pretense of trade. They brought along with them their religion which was Islamic under which were the Arabic school.

The first set of schools were usually situated under big trees with students who were mainly normally conducted in the evenings after their trading activities with the merchants who acted as the tutors. These teachers are called “Mallams”. It is obvious that the first type of school system didn’t have any facility apart from the slate and foreign textbooks used.

Furthermore, with the arrival of western education, the uses of facilities became vogue. Classrooms which came in small rooms now in form of schools which comprises of administrative blocks, offices with such facilities as chairs, tables, chalk and chalkboards. Textbooks were also provided to aid teaching, this ease the way knowledge was formally imparted to the students to prove for old stations system.

Walberg and Thomas (1992) shown that pupils have been noted to learn best when they can effectively explore at school environment that is rich in material, so that whenever they are given the responsibility to make meaningful choice, they afford to interact with the available facilities.

This led to Adaralegbe’s (1978) statement which states that the large scale of educational programme had been embarked upon, because of increasing awareness of the country that, education pauses the way for modernization and enable one to improve oneself. Putting this into consideration in our schools presently it will be noted that, education by various government bit yet, much efforts is still required to meet up adequately. Since over fifty million people desire education presently.

Classrooms are very vital in schools, the classrooms are constructed to suit the purpose of learning and also considering climate of the people. eagle Hardt (1954) emphasized that classrooms referred to as “Teaching laboratories”. Much importance should be attached to facilities to enabler an imagined educational programme to be achieved. This in short shows the importance of the provision of efficient and effective facilities to help enhance a smooth and conducive teaching and learning process to enable the production of effective manpower for the nation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Inadequate facilities will surely affect the smooth teaching and learning process in all schools. There are some problems outlined below encountered in schools due to lack of adequate facilities. It is known that the academic performance of each student depends to a large extent on the facilities exposed to while learning but, when they are lacking some problems is faced.

The first noted, peculiar problem would be generated when there is no inclusive teaching and learning conduction. The conducive could be as a result of non availability of facilities like table and chair in the classroom. There can never be way of concentration by students. Students can not be expected to achieve any of the objectives at the end of the lesson. If pupils have to share chairs with their mates, they would be easily distracted among themselves and the class which is supposed to be actively involved in the learning process turns out to be appealing and there is enough discomfort for the day to discourage the interest of the pupils for the whole day’s work.

Since the interest of the students are very low, they are going to also have a low level of understanding, knowledge to be imparted to the students would not be fully understood. There may also be limitation in understanding. Laboratories are lacking in many schools and in some schools were they can be found reagents and equipment are lacking. For instance students in  science class who always learn in abstract, that is without practical knowledge, of what teacher is saying cannot have effective learning and this will automatically affect his/her academic performance. These lacks of laboratories have resulted to low interest in science subjects today, such subjects are physics, chemistry and biology.

Also the non availability of teaching facilities like textbooks, buildings, chart, chalkboards etc. have hindered students performance academically and this has resulted in their low interest in most of the subjects offered in their various level in secondary schools.

Finally, it is observed that the students supply their acquired knowledge in effectively since they have not been able to be taught with the practical aspects but rather expressed to only theoretical aspects of their field of specialization, if they have been opportune to make use of facilities in different aspects they would have been effectively appropriate.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The origin of using facilities to aid learning has been the pre-occupation of the proponent of school facilities. The studying of the teaching facilities in relation to students’ academic performance is to know the importance of teaching facilities.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study will be limited to a few selected secondary schools under Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study covers the following schools;

1.   Akoko-Edo Comprehensive College, Igarra.

2.   Unity Comprehensive College, Ibillo.

3.   Ososo Grammar School, Ososo.

4.   Somorika Grammar School, Somorika.

5.   Ikpeshi Grammar school, Ikpeshi.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is meant to help educators and education planners realize what problems students who are subjected to since there is the rapid desire for education by an increasing population of Nigeria, which have to be met adequately and with the high rate of facility storage.

The study is meant to identify these problems and how much effect it has on the performance of the students since these facilities exist to facilitate and stimulate the instructional programme of the school system they should be provided and maintained.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This project aims at the teaching facilities and how it affects the performance of students in selected institutions. In order to achieve this, the following research questions are very essential.

1)   Is there a relative difference in academic performance between schools with adequate teaching facilities and school without adequate teaching facilities?

2)   What are the problems encountered by schools without teaching facilities?

3)   What are the effects of lack of teaching facilities?

4)   What are the advantages of having effective teaching facilities?

5)   What are the disadvantages of not having teaching facilities in a school?

6)   Are there adequate facilities in your school?

7)   Is there chance of improvement in providing facilities to schools?

8)   Is there teaching and evaluation condition good in your school?

9)   Do you enjoy teaching without adequate school facilities?

10)               How can the government improve effective teaching in schools?

ABSTRACT

The education of females has been completely neglected in African before the coming of missionaries. The coming of missionaries into Africa, however, at first did not encourage the formal education of female because of the traditional belief. That the women’s roles in the family are for procreation and to assist their husband in day to day activities, like farming and fishing. This notion was gradually eroded with the coming of female’s missionaries lately into Africa. The three tiers of government i.e. local, regional and federal appreciated the need in female education after these events and started mass mobilization on female education,. Parents too, took a cue from great women in academics, politics and commerce which western education has projected.

The study is to find out the extent with which the highlighted motivational factors can contribute towards women education, using year II and year III Economics, commerce students of College of Education Ekiadolor. Secondly, whether an intrinsic motivational factors can stimulate the learning of a given task.

To accomplish this aim, questionnaires was designed and administered on one hundred students to investigate whether extrinsic motivational factors can influence the education of females. The respondents are given information to questions that relates to extrinsic factors, whether or not it enhances learning. Secondly, another one hundred questionnaires are administered to other group of one hundred students. These questionnaires are rooted intrinsic motivational factors in relation to the learning of task. After analysis of the data collected, the following findings and recommendations were made:

1.            It was discovered that extrinsic factors had great influence in the motivation of female students.

2.            It was also discovered that intrinsic factors had contributed largely to the learning of a given task/tasks.

3.            Motivation factors are needed in the education of females particularly those that show apathy to schooling.

4.            There is also general negative attitude towards female education in our society. Therefore, they are to be encouraged through granting of scholarship particularly to females.

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In pre-colonial days, Africans knew little or nothing about western education, but with the advent of colonialism, western education was introduced into Africa by missionaries.

At the beginning, western education was generally embraced by the male populations because of the African belief that the women’s place is in the “Kitchen”. Females were looked at as a helper to their male folks predominately in their farming professions. Consequently, the introduction of western education produced many scholars and personalities, for example, Rev. Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who translated the Holy Bible from English Language into Yoruba language and Sapara Williams a Lagosian who became the first lawyer in Africa in the 19th century.

Fortunately, the notion of women’s place being in the “kitchen” was gradually being swept underground by the African populace (i.e. people of both gender), when women missionaries started coming into Africa after their counter parts had come. One of such was Mary Selessor who eradicated the killing of twins in Calabar the South-South of Nigeria. This social change, gradually motivated women is going to school to acquire west an education.

Parents, local governments and then regional government were now actively involved in the education of women. This government to further enhance the advancement of women education decided to carryout mass mobilization of parents to see that women are educated. They also drew out a blueprint such as, granting scholarship to indigent students, developing women curriculum (Food and nutrition Studies, needle work etc).

The efforts by parents, government and missionaries to say the least brought a revolution towards the orientation and beliefs against female education. Eventually, this gradual change began to yield dividends in producing great women scholars and technologist, for example Mrs. Funmilayo Rasome Kuti, the first female in Nigeria to drive a car, professor Grace Alele Williams a great mathematician and first women vice Chancellor in Nigeria and dr. Abimbola Awonivi, the first woman medical doctor in African, just to mention a few.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Africans believed that the woman’s place in the “kitchen” a helper to her male counterparts in his day to day activities. They also believe that the education of female is a waste exercise.  Parents were of the notion that after their education, they drop their maidens name for their husband’s family name after marriage they concluded that females are basically for procreation.

Thus, this project intends to find out the motivational factors that enhance the learning skills of females using students at College of Education, Ekiadolor Benin as a case study. In order to appreciate motivation in learning we must find out the degree at which motivation influences the learning of a given task/tasks.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to find out from the females students.

1.            Why they seems to have lost interest in lerning and displaying no motivation to lean in school or who are defeated or turnoff to school.

2.            To know the degree at which motivation can stimulate the learning of a given task/tasks.

3.            To help teachers and educational administrators to provide specific guidelines for change in practice which candidates students problems with motivation to learn in curriculum centred schools or learners centred.

4.            Trying to eradicate the frustration teachers feel in trying to motivate hand to reach students.

5.            Trying to know students and learning and emotional needs and other stress producing situations that exist in many of our schools.

6.            Trying to help teachers know about the nature of motivation to learn, and ways it can help students develop their learning skills.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research project is to investigate why females in Africa with reference to Nigeria seems to lost interest in learning and displaying no motivation to learn in school or turnoff to schools. The significance of this study therefore is to identify motivational factors that can bring attitudinal change towards female’s education. To identify which motivational factors that can enhance the learning of a given task/tasks.

After identifying the remotes causes the researcher will then make recommendations that will encourage female education in order for the sex group to contribute meaningfully quota to the growth of the society.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following hypothesis have been tentatively propounded in order to guide the research:

1.            Does extreme motivational factors has any influence on the education of females in Africa with special references to Nigeria.

2.            Can intrinsic motivational factors the learning of a given task/tasks.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study was carried out amongst year II and year III economics/commerce , accounting females students of college of education, ekiadolor Benin City. The problems the researcher encountered the cost of financing this research due to the harsh economy facing this country at the moment. In addition, the problems of getting adequate research materials, such as journals, books and publications based on females education in Africa with particular reference to Nigeria. It was discovered that some respondents/students did not give accurate answers to the questions “they decided to answer anything that come out their mind”, this by and large gave the researcher little problems when carrying out the research.

ABSTRACT

This research will be conducted to evaluate how economic background affects students’ performance in Economics in Ovia north east local government area of Edo state. The following research questions were formulated for the study:

1. Does the economic status of parents affect the educational performance of students?

2. Does parent’s educational status affect the educational performance of their children?

3. Does the family size affect the student’s educational performance?

4. Does lack of educational facilities influence the educational performance of students?

Four secondary schools will be surveyed. Students interviewed were mostly from low economic status parents with low educational background. It was found from the study that the education and income of parents affect students’ performance that the availability of educational facilities has no effect on students’ performance while that of family size has a positive relationship with students’ performance. The factors responsible for these relationships were discussed. Some recommendations and suggestions for further research were made in the last chapter.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The academic performance of students in economics in secondary school these days has been attributed to many family factors. Many people including the sociologists and philosophers have carried out a number of resources into those factors that hinder or enhance students’ performance in Economics. They include poor quality of teaching, irregular attendance at school, emotional attitude of the child to school and school subjects, defective physical conditions which are manifested in poor hearing, bad vision, impediment of speech, the environment and the society as well as the occupation of the father of the student among other related factors. The raging friction between the school as to which of the two is in fact responsible for the poor or good performance of student in economic examination has enabled the researcher to take a cursory look at the influence of fathers occupation on the academic performance of student in area of Edo state is chosen as a case study.

The study is rooted in the theory that there is need for a close cooperation between is need for a close cooperation between the home and the school for an understanding of the learning problem of children. The society has apparently decided for better or worse to educate it children outside the home in separate, self contained, single purpose establishments. Having lived of education from here in this way, to go on and discuss the way they influence each other could be a matter of for they can be resolved most at the root of all discussion about teacher parent relation. There was a time when a parents rarely entered school except to assault looking school master. Teachers on their part, were supposed to be quality of showing no interest in the home to which their pupils belonged.

However, nowadays there is undoubtedly a considerable upsurge of interest in the relationship between home and school, and a trend towards ensuring this interest various formal organization and system in many schools have presents teacher organization, many areas have action groups of one sort to another, you have the national confederation of parents teacher association and the advisory center for education, all of whom are very much concerned with home school links for the purpose of educational achievement of children.

Similarly, it has been accepted that learning can occur in many different settings in the home and play ground, for example as well as in the classroom. Every child brings with him into the class room all his ear, her home training and experience, a kind of internal environment that makes him an environmental factors of considerable significance to others.

A learning environment is therefore more than that which can be measured in the students immediate physical surrounding, it includes everything inside and outside the space the child occupies which in any way affects his behavior during a particular learning routine.

Economic background characteristics associated with academic performance and intelligence can be divided into two status variable high economic status and low economic status. Both status are determined by the level of education, occupation, and income in the society. These variables though interesting, tell little about how their effects are mediated to child and into process variables, such as achievement process of parents, home language models, academic home guidance and social participation of family.

It is believed that the level of education determines income and occupation of the individual. This in turn determines the persons’ status. But this is not so again because of his health. So because of this variance, the researchers will look at the relationship between academic performance and these variables. The size of the family will not be left out in the research as one of the variables. Though social class is most often used as a child economic background variable in Western European societies and north America, it is rather difficult, if not impossible at this stage to use the social class variable in the developing countries of Asia. Africa and Nigeria in particular in the same way as it is used in Western European countries.

Two reasons can be suggested for this, firstly, there has not been any attempt to classify occupations in these developing countries. Secondly, and perhaps the most important reasons is that the social system of the extended family in these developing countries would make social class based on occupation meaningless for instance a man in a developing country in a good job with a very small salary per annum, may not afford to live a middle class family probably because a lot of people depend on his single salary for their existence so because of this, the size of the family will be looked at as one variable. The different kinds of family-polygamous and monogamous will not be in this research.

The highlight of what will be found in each chapter is as follows: the first chapter deals with the statement of problems and relevant research questions are formulated while the second chapter deals with critical reviews of important literature on the subject. This exercise is seen as a guide to reveal the variables that have been found to be important as well as the gaps in the previous studies on the determinant of performance of individuals. It also enabled the researcher as well as the useful hypothesis, which emerged from their works. An examination of the literature also helped in the formulations of the research problems. Third chapter discuses the various methods which have been employed in collecting the data including the operationalization of the concepts and the descriptive statistics. The fourth chapter deals with the analysis of the data collected. The findings from these analyses are also explained and interpreted with the context of the theoretical framework. The works end with chapter five the conclusion which summarizes what had been done in the survival for further research and then the gaps in the study that can be filled by other research are also pointed out.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Today, teachers are often blame for the low academic performance of students without actually finding out other related factors that can contribute to the students problems as far as ac academic is concerned, most parents are quick to point accusing fingers at both the child and his teacher. Should the whole problems be entirely heaped on teachers who always want the best for their pupils? One would like to find out the justifications the parents have for blaming the teachers as regard the low performance of students in their academics. The truth is that the foundation of the child’s socialization is laid at home. Also children spend more time at home than in school. Many factors associated with the family could have actually contributed to the high or low performance of students with the economic as one of them. The class strata in our society based on economic ground have become a common phenomena. There is an equal distribution of wealth among citizens. Thus there arise the educated and the illiterate poverty stricken masses. The study therefore considered the influence of those stratified classes on student’s academic performance. In order words, the study is focused upon how the academic performance of students can be influenced by the family economic status. The following research questions are posed by the researcher.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Home is a place in which children learn to interpret realities (Wary and Passman, 1996) parents serve as significant interpreters to children for information about the world and children ability (Hall, Kelly, Hansen and Vulwein, 1996) home influence is an important force in preparing students for their role as workers. Young people form their attitude about work and career as a result of interaction with the home. Home background provides the basis on which a student’s career planning and decision making evolves. However, within each home, the level of involvement can very positively or negatively.

Home background factor found to be associated with career choice includes parents socio-economic status (SES), their level of education and biogenetics factor such as physical size, gender, ability and temperament, Panic and Jepson (1992), in a study on adolescent vocational development reported that had the most effect on education plans and occupational aspiration was education. Mortime et al (1992) also reported that parents with post secondary education tend to pass along its importance in their children a finding reported by other studies. Montgomery (1992) votes that students talented in mathematics viewed their career choice as reflective on the interest that stem from early home influence and educational opportunities.

De Piddeo (1990) however, points out that the lower level of parents education can retard adolescents career choice. Being born to parents with limited education and income reduces the likelihood of going to college or achieving a professionally and occupational goals and essentially predetermined the child’s likely career choice. Home income is another aspect of home background that influences the career choice of a student.

Mortimer et al (1992) one reason for this may be that home with limited economic resources may tend to direct children first the older children in the home giving less hope and encouragement to the younger children in the home. It is therefore understandable that the self efficacy of students with respect to career opportunities is linked to the economic support they can expect from their parents.

Another home background factor found to be associated with career choice include the parents spiritual/health parents who love Jesus and want the best for their children will urge their children to pursue a career that will bring them joy in the future. Thus proverbs 22:6 admonished parents to pay attention to their children while the children in turn should prove themselves obedient (Ephesians 6:13).

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The standard of education in Nigeria today is gradually falling thus leading to lots of arrangements amongst scholars civil servants, educational planners etc as to what is the immediate and remote causes of the failure and the factors hindering high standard of education, while we may blame governments, teachers, and children, the home which students comes from leave much to be desired. It is important to note that we cannot exonerate the home that a child came from when talking about the students choice of career in secondary school. Home background factors found to have influence the students choice of career is based on parents socio-economic status, parents educational level, parents love for Jesus and family size and parents temperament.

RESEARCH QUESTION

In order to deal with the influence of home background on the career choice of secondary school students the following questions were asked:

1.            To what degree does the socio-economic status of parents influence the career choice of students in secondary school?

2.            Is there any relationship between the level of education of parents and the career choice of students in secondary schools?

3.            Does the size of a home have any influence on the choice of career of secondary school students?

4.            Is there any relationship between living condition at home and choice of career of students?

5.            To what extend does the ability and temperament of parents affect the choice of career of students?

Home is the bedrock of the child’s socialization processes. A child starts to learn even right from its mother womb and as such as it is born to this world (2 Timothy 2:15) as Gods creature, made in God’s image, the child does not learn in vacuum but rather is active by learning, in a society of humans who influence his guess such society embodies the home which the family belongs to and school source of western education. It is observed that the choice of career of students in secondary school can be denied by their parent’s socio-economic status, level of educational, family size of the parent ability.  It is therefore the purpose of this study to investigate the impact of home background on the choice of career of students in secondary schools.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students succeed in school when certain factors are put in place or put under control, some of these includes ensuring that the child feeds well at home, get enough rest, does his home work has his work checked by both his teachers and parents, has his school materials, gets adequate encouragement from their parents, useful information should be given the child to guide futures generation of choice of career. In the light of the above, the students will assist parents to have insight into the behavior and needs of their children. The study intends to reveal the factors that impedes or enhance the choice of students in secondary schools.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is restricted to secondary schools in Esan Central local government area of Edo State. In the realization of similar condition facing most students in other secondary schools in Edo State the survey shall focus on students in their first year and final year of studies.
