ABSTRACT

This study was made to ascertain the implementation of Database Management Software for a confectionery Business i.e. the problems of database management is a life long problem in companies for accurate and effective communication between the buyer and the staffs of the business or establishment.

The findings of the study will help to make recommendation and suggestion for future improvement and solution of the present situation.

Data relevant to the objectives of the study were from secondary source and an empirical study done by me. Ora I interview was conducted on selected persons and observations was made and references to relevant materials was also conducted.

Those randomly selected are based at Mr. Bigg’s Enugu and composed of both literate and illiterate staffs. All those interviewed that provide me with relevant materials and gave directive measure are literate and specialist in their job.

                                           CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Database management software can be described as software used by an organization or firm to store data’s or particulars of workers for reference purpose. This database management software for a confectionery business simply means design a software that will store data’s of all the things produced or sold by the company.

These things are something like sweet, cake, meat pie and so on. This software is a kind of software that is going to hold data’s of all the things that are sold and store in the company or business firm.

This database should be able to allow staff’s to access what they have in the database so as to know which one is available for the customer and also know what is needed at point in time. Only registered staff must have access to the database. Foe the software to work, the business or company has to engage in a small network system known as Internet.

This connection of two or more computers in an office or business firm require what is called a Server but this time the server will not be the one used for wide area network but the server to be used now is known as the personal web server (PWS)

This personal web server will allow you to be able to transfer file from one computer to the other but the information that will be transfer cannot be seen by anybody outside that networks of computer so it is well secure. This software will be working as that use banks when they have not yet connected to the internet which is a wide area network so that they can make report of what happen on that days activities.

1.1     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

After I have study the manual system of running this business in Mr. Bigg’s Enugu, a lot of problems were discovered

These problems are:

–        Delay in attending to customer request

–        Delay in processing of payment mostly when the customers are many.

–         Communication gaps between the buyer and the sever. In order for this problem to be solved, a management database of goods will assist to be able to engage in effective management of the business.

1.2     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

After much study of the way this business is being run in Mr. Biggs’s Enugu, there is great need for a computerize database management software that  will make the business to run smoothly and so there will be accurate and effective communication between the buyer and the staff of the business.

1.3     AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of carrying out this study are as follows:

–        Minimize order time and response time between buyers and sellers.

–        Bridge the communication gaps that exist between the staffs and the customers.

–        Provide a more secured, faster and more accurate means of buying the product.

–         Provide a faster, more reliable, less cumbersome and more efficient means of payment.

ABSTRACT

This project is solely based on the critical appraisal of the use of computer in result processing. The work has done with the aim of studying all the processes involved in manual processing of students result with a view of developing software that can aid in doing the job whenever the new system is introduced to the relevant department (Computer Science Department). In the course of achieving these objective relevant literatures were reviewed on the subject matter.

Based on the review, various staff under Computer Science Department of Institute of Management and Technology Enugu were marked and used for the purpose of collecting the needed data for the research work.

The methods used during the finding were oral, interviews, observation, document review. It was also done randomly. Based on the data collected the researcher find out that there was much problem encountered using manual result processing, which has been taken care of by the developed software.

                                    CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Information technology is able to facilitate the revolution of changes, which optimize performance and profitability to institutions, organization and companies because it provides solution to one of the key business barrier that is distance, time and difficulties associated with crossing them or sharing them. Emergency of electronic processing of data and it’s computer technologies has led to the death of bugs, errors and time wasting during processing and computation of student’s result.

Electronics data processing introduced towards the end of 1934’s has brought fundamental dangers in the way, so many things art done, including the topic of this project and so many other things like product advertising, information sharing, on-line computation, electronic data storage, electronic mail exchange, to list but a few.

The computer science department in institute of Management and Technology Enugu is responsible for the processing various departments during examination, right from the inception of this great institution; result processing has been manually processed.  The manual system employed is not very efficient, in that a lot of paper work has to be done which takes a reasonable length of time to prepare. Due to the increasing number of students in computer science department (IMT) Enugu, that has written the examination in the school, results computation of the student’s CGPA has been a very difficult task.

Therefore, because of this problems and errors arising from such a system, a software-computerized result processing system becomes inevitable; the benefits accruable from the computer-based system cannot be over emphasized.

1.1     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Historically, result computation and students data record management in computer science department in the Institute of management and technology Enugu has been affected by several factors based on the current manual processing method used such as:

–        Loss of vital information relating to student result/ records

–        The time and labour involved in the student result computation of CGPA

–        Files and records not properly kept.

–        Miscalculation of students CGPA after graduation.

–        Difficulties involved in searching for a specified record

–        Wrong transcription and mutilations by accident or on purpose

–        Information is very insure and can be accessed by the wrong persons.

–        Insecurity of the result, which can be modified by unauthorized person/or access.

–        Use of filing cabinets makes retrieval of information very difficult.

–         Difficult of data sharing i.e. from HOD’s offices to exams and records.

1.2     PURPOSE OF STUDY

Electronics data processing environment where information is processed using computers system hooked on to a Network is more advantageous. Owing to this, therefore, the purpose of this study is directed towards developing a powerful computer application program that will collapse the short-comings encountered in the student’s result processing and data management in the great department of computer science in the institute of management and technology (IMT) Enugu.

1.3     AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this project is to provide a faster means of reducing some (or all) the problem encountered during result computation and registration of student such as:

–        Errors due to over sight

–        Redundancies in record keeping

–        Errors in computation

–        Difficulties in sharing

–        Money time for duplication

–         Delay in computation

ABSTRACT

The project work is aimed at revealing the benefits of computerization in the promotion process of the loc al government system, especially as it concerns the staff of the local government. The project explained the way the local government service commissions Enugu embarks on promotion process of the local government staff in Enugu State. It has as its main purpose and other to advice the local government service commission Enugu on the benefits of computerization in the promotion process. This is to increase speed and accuracy of processing promotion records for effective promotion to encourage efficiency and productivity in the local government system.

                              CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Promotion is the gradual upgrading of the civil servants in Nigeria. The upgrading of the civil servant is a motivational incentive for greater productivity motivational needs are of total importance and significance because the success or failure of any organization is largely determined by the output of such organization. then have been cases of inefficiency in the public bureaucracy  especially the local government system. The resultant effect is that many of such local government system find it difficult to meet up with the demands made on them by the citizenry. Multitude of them fails in their task of rural development. It has been suggested that the situation is not unconnected with poor promotion process of the employees. Therefore, it us vital that an effective computer designed system are installed in the local government as well as local government service commissions to facilitate quick promotion process. The local government service commission has been empowered by law to promote the senior civil seriates working in the local government system.

1.1     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Organizing the promotion process has been a great problem to the Enugu State Local Government Service Commission. The processes involved are often inaccurate due to incorrect information information’s are collected haphazardly.

1.       The compilation of senior staff nominal roll by the various local government in the state is often inaccurate due to lock of correct information.

2.       The compilation of the staff seniority list is often distorted through corrupt practices. This is because there are no effective computer system to check it. Therefore promotion according to seniority is not denied. The compilation of the senior staff nominal roll is done manually. This wastes time in the promotion process. The above-mentioned problems in the system have prompted the researcher to look for ways of curbing the collection of senior staff data manually.

1.2     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The implementation of this research for the improvement of the promotion scheme will help the case study to improve and facilitate the promotion process. The computerized design will also help the Enugu punctual and accurate in carrying out the promotion process of the local government councils within and outside the state to implement the design to improve the promotion productivity.

The research design will also help both the Federal and state civil service commission to facilitate promotions of their staff. Finally the research will be an addition to other research work already done on the topic.

ABSTRACT

Information is the driving force in a transaction driven operation decision, with rapid advancement in information technology the resulting increase in complexity of Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The quality and variety of information needed for a transaction driven operation is increasing forth. We are now in computer age where our success and wealth will continue to grow through the use of computer to find solution to our problems. This project is concerned with the development of a transaction driven operation in a computerized database updating system in Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). Hence, provision for quick referencing, calculation, large information storage, data maintenance etc are also available.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

One of the most important device where computer application was achieved a remarkable recognition is in the area of transaction-driven operations. With respect to that having examined some problems is that retard the speed, accuracy and efficiency in a typical manual transaction-driven operation sector, attempts to develop a computerized method of handling a transaction operation in a big organization such as Nigerian Stock Exchange is to be embarked upon. However, if the program become useful and prove efficient contrary to the traditional method of manual handling of transaction operations. It should be such as a useful tool in computerization of other related for unsanctioned activities.

1.1     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Organizational problem contain hard and soft issues to varying degrees and the importance of the soft systems view point is that it avoids thinking use at solving problem in a machine like or mechanistic way. There may be a yearning for systems to behave in a controllable and predictable fashion but where people are involved, they will not often manage see situations in a narrow fashion and solve the more oblivious ‘hard’ problems, for example, about technology improved use of resource capacity, reduced administration cost etc. This is quite true of the fact the money unmated in printing out stock card, writing materials, hiring outside service is reduced.

The classic paper on evaluating short term information is that of Boyd Cole and Khrashow’s James (1964). Both authors distinguished between the cost benefit approaches from their study model, they can put with physical performance of delivery time i.e reduction in information delay. However, in some business companies most of clerks have been accustomed to manual processing.

Administrative business application refers broadly to those computer based system used in the exclusion and management of basic operations of an enterprises. They are distinguished for process control, information retrieval and management information systems by the category of operation they are intended to some. Mechandazation of these appliances has been and continues to be the most frequent reason what business organization install computer in the early days of computer use. Routine application such as payroll and inventory normally are the first to be computerized today, as organizations seek to solve more closely integrated areas of their operations. Highly complex computer appliances are being undertaken, for example, distribution management changes. When the real problem is about the human interaction.

In other words, the problems a researcher will face in embarking on a research work may be due to capital, but most especially getting materials to source out the research work. Take for instance Nigerian Stock Exchange. This is one of the big existing company in the Nigeria and where to getting information about the company will be a very hard one.  At times wrong information are being given to researcher which makes the research work more difficult.

1.2     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to design a computerized database updating system for a transaction driven operation system.

A computerized database updating system for a transaction driven operation will improve on the efficiency, effectiveness, accuracy, consistency and optimization on transaction processes.

Another purpose of this study is to design a system that will replace the manual process and of course resolve inherent problems.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to computerize quality control system for manufacturing organization (A case study of S.E.D.I Enugu) and to develop a computer package whereby the techniques observed from the manual method can be improved on. It is known fact that the manual method of quality control system in production has been associated with lots in inaccuracy in quality control and this has lead to early break down of parts when in service. The software with developed will facilitate and enhanced the mode and methods of quality control in spare production of S.E.D.I Enugu.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1     INTRODUCTION

A quality control system in production management is a qualitative technique with strong financial implication having direct relationships with production, marketing, purchasing and financial policies.

Also, it is a system used in the management of manufacturing held by any organization as it concern addition to, storage and removal from the trading organization with appropriate record keeping.

S.E.D.I. Ltd, Enugu as an assembly plant maintains a large amount of stick vehicle spare parts which are imported from any of her vendor, Viz:- MBAG-Mercedes – Benz AG Germany, MBBRAS-Mercedes-  Benz Brazil or MBE-Mercedes-Benz Espana for the production line or sales to distributions or authorized agents/dealers.

These stocks are held for various reasons among which are:

(a)     To ensure unit sufficient goods are available to meet anticipated demand.

(b)     To provide a buffer between production processes. This is applicable to work in progress stocks effectively decouple operation.

(c)      To meet possible shortages in the future.

All these spare part, which may similar menu by description, varies greatly among themselves depending on the type of model of vehicle using them. Thus, the management and operation of stores functions and the control of stock can only be performed in an efficient manner when there is an appropriate means of upturning and storing information and the facility of the analysis and use of this information.

In the light of the above S.E.D.I. Ltd Enugu maintains a visible records system return to as KARDEX, As a prerequisite  in any quality control system ANAMCO Ltd maintains a peculiar but unique  coding system such that all the numerous spare parts are each uniquely  coded and identified for accurate and specific information on them.

The operation of the KARDEX was of ten prove to redundancy or duplication of items when ever there is mistitling, it requires a lot of paper work with their possible variation or discrepancies during documentation; it involves, so many people thereby wasting a lot of man hours; increased cost of procurement storage of non-moving or obsolete items leads to customer dissatisfaction due to time wasting and unavailability of information. Thus, the efficiency of the system is greatly depending on human factor and as such accuracy.

So, it is an attempt to rectify and modify the above inadequacies that we have decided to develop and implement an integrated computerized stock control system so as to maximize the operation efficiency, ensure customers satisfaction based on quick services, minimize the non-hour requirement involved reduce the running costs, guarantee accuracy and at the same time generate report that assist management in her decision making as it concerns planning organizing and controlling.

1.2     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY (MB-S.E.D.I LTD ENUGU)

Sequel to the recommendation of the fourth (4th) National Development plan in 1975 to increase the number of automobile plants in Nigeria in order to address the problem of transportation a Mercedes Benz plant was chosen. Other reasons for establishing the plant being to

(a)     Transfer of technology            (b)     Manufacture and assembly of indigenous man-power training      (c )     Modernisation of industrial workers and   (e)      Diversification and rapid industrialization of the Nigeria Economy.

MB-S.E.D.I. Ltd, as it is famously known and called means Mercedes-Benz Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company Limited Enugu. The company is strategically located along IBB-Airport Link Road Enugu Industrial Layout Enugu.

The pliant is a joint owned by the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Daimier-Benz AG of Germany. Their share equity is in the ratio of 60% to Nigeria and 40% to Daimier-Benz AG Germany.

Therefore Mercedes-Ben S.E.D.I.  Ltd. Enugu was licensed to manufacture Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle in Nigeria. The company was incorporated in Nigeria as a Private Limited Company.

On the 17th day of January 1997. On the 12th day of May 1978, its foundation stone was laid by Colonel John Atom Kpera then the military Governor of the thin ANAMBRA STATE (NOW, ENUGU and ANAMBRA). Later, on the 8th day of June 1980 Mercedes-Benz ANAMCO LTD, wad commissioned by Alhaji; Shehu Usman Aliju Shangari, then the President Head of State Commander in Chief of the Nigeria Armed forces S.E.D.I. LTDM commenced production officially on January 1981, ever since the n her services work has spread throughout Nigeria. The company uses foreign and local contents in the manufacture of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles.

1.3     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

It is a common knowledge that decision makers in any organization requires, Information to perform the great functions of planning. Therefore, it is necessary to discover an adequate means of making the information available in making everyone concerned. This is because, for decision to be made correctly. The information must be consistent, accurate, time and reliable.

Thus, this work is aimed at developing and implementing an integrated computerized quality control system in production of an automobile firm (Case study S.E.D.I Enugu Nigeria)

1.4     PROBLEMS OF THE STUDY

(1)     The problem encountered when carrying out this study are that obtaining this necessary information from the staff of S.E.D.I. was not easy because some of their information are regarded as company secret.

(2)     There is competition of the way few pass personal computer, which has DBASE 111, plus application because many students make use of them in missing their project program.

(3)     Production of spare part on manual approaches has been very difficult.

(4)     Problem of fund a lot of money is been incurred in carry out this project.

(5)     There may be inadequate or not existent stock records.

(6)     Obsolete items are retained in stock, which makes in difficult for one to know the overall items in stock.
