Abstract

WhatsApp is a smart phone application for instant messaging. Lately, the application’s popularity has risen. One the unique features of the application is it ability to enhance communication within a globe. Class room communication between teaching faculty and high school students using WhatsApp has not yet, to our knowledge, been researched thoroughly. Therefore, we have chosen to conduct an exploratory research project employing a qualitative method. Twelve half- structured interviews were carried out to teachers who used the application to in order to communicate with their pupils. It turns out that class WhatsApp groups are used for main purposes: communicating with students;   nurturing the social atmosphere; creating dialogue and encouraging sharing among students; and as a learning platform. Thee participants mentioned the technical advantages of WhatsAPP, such as simple operation, low cost, availability, and immediacy. They also refer to educational advantages, such as the creation of a pleasant environment and an in-depth acquaintance with fellow students, which had a positive influence upon the manner of conversation. The participant also indicated academic advantages such as the accessibility of learning materials, teacher availability and the continuation of learning beyond class hours. Nevertheless, there are also challenges and problems. Firstly there is technical difficulty that not all students posses a smart phone. Secondly, teachers are apt to be annoyed by the flood of irrelevant and nonessential messages. Also, educational difficulties may arise, such as incompatibility of language between students and the students’ assumptions that their teacher should be available on a 24/7 bases.

Key words: WhatsApp, social network, instant message, communication platform.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study.

WhatsApp is an instant messaging application for smartphones that operates under a subscription business model. The proprietary, cross – platforms application uses the interest to send text messages, images, video, user location and audio messages.

In January 2015, WhatsApp was the most globally popular messaging application with more than 600 million active users, In April 2015,WhatsApp reached 800 million active users.

WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of yahoo!

WhatsApp uses a customised version of the open standard of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). Upon installation, it creates a user account using the phone number of the registering member as the username.

The internet holds a vast array of information; the educational resources delivered on web pages are in nearly every topic of study. Whatsapp being an internet oriented application plays a vital role in this course and the state of reliance of students on this application for information service delivery is alarming.

Social constructivist learning theory seeks to improve social interactions between students and to construct and share knowledge. For the purpose of this research, the focus will be on social utilities particularly WhatsApp and the rate at which students react towards this application for information service delivery.

Learning is the outcome of social interactions between students in collaborative learning activities. Activities can include sharing through mobile devices such as discussion forums (Chan, 2005), which can be used for knowledge construction sharing (Gillingham & Topper, 1999). The construction of knowledge is based on social interaction between online students (Vygotsky, 1978). Learning can also be influenced by multiple variables, including the cognitive and psychological state of the learner, teacher professionalism and nature and complexity of the pedagogical approach.

The key note here is that WhatsApp instant messaging is very easy to use, the majority of students use this mobile system for academic and other purposes. In this system students are quickly informed of every update and any message inserted by a member of the group or discussion forum. An easy to operate user interface is important in helping orientate the student’s attitude towards this technology.

  • Statement of problem

In this era of information and communication technology, social media especially WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, BlackBerry Messenger etc.

And many others have revolutionised and redefined monopoly of news and information by mass media (Television, Radio, Magazine Industries). Social has in recent time turn the citizens not only as information consumers but also as information distributors.

Students log on to WhatsApp, BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter, Instagram and other social utilities regularly. As much as the use of these utilities by students helps the circulation of information, it also has its demining perks on other counts. Certain problems are faced with this development in such a way that numerous discussion forums are created by by individuals belonging to a particular forum of same category of students. For instance, the 300level students of L.I.S having a group created on WhatsApp and every member of this class is added to a forum, but at some point unlikely arguments emerge and some sets of become extremely abusive which may result to splitting members of the group by creating another forum and cause most people to exit the initial one.

Data subscriptions to keep this service running are quite expensive, some service providers make it affordable while some don’t. And in most cases the option of switching to a less expensive service provider cannot be considered simply for the reason of location, i.eThe choice of a service provider to purchase data from is determined by the location where this network provides wide network coverage (internet access speed).

This applications sometimes pose lack of concentration for students especially during an on – going lecture. Technology is good and has improved a lot in every developing country, society and for people from all works of life. But in certain ways there has not been proper orientation on how the use of these utilities can be managed. Seminars can be held for students in the university on how to time and use these social applications in other to prevent distraction from classroom learning, abuses online, misuse of the handle and the government can also meet the bodies of our service provider company so as to outline a solution towards the cost effect of data subscription in order for internet service to be made accessible and affordable for all at any given time.

Introduction

This complication dealt with taxation as a subject, its principles objectives, classes, purpose and effect in any given economy weather.

Taxation is a compulsory but non-punitive levy on properties, income of individual and co-operation bodies. The money raised there constitutes part of source of finance for general government expenditure in the economy. It involves transfer of resources or income from private sector to the public sector in order to accomplish or achieve some of the major economic social and economic responsibilities under taken by the government.

Taxation according to the encyclopedia is the process by which the people pay for the expenses of the government.

System of taxation taxes are classified as progressive proportional or regressive according to the percentage of income they take as income raises or fails.

  1. Progressive tax system: under the progressive taxation, the higher the proportion of income, which is taken away as tax and lower the income, the proportion of income taken away an increasing proportion of raises.
  2. Proportional tax system: this system whereby the rate of taxation is the small for all human earners.
  3. Regressive tax system: the higher the income the lower the percentage income which is taken away as tax. Regressive taxation s common where the rich and poor have to pay some amount of money as tax, either directly as poll tax indirectly in the form of higher prices. A goods and services consumed by both the rich and the poor. In west africa most taxes are regressive since people in the various communities are usually asked to pay certain fixed sum of money toward certain development project. Irrespective of income and also since indirect taxes like import and export duties from a greater proportion of government revenues.

Some economic effects of taxation

  1. A deterrent to work: heavy direct taxation especially when closely linked to current earnings can act as a serious check to production by encouraging absenteeism and making men disinclined to work overtime. However direct taxation may actually increased to incentive to work in order to earn more money as to buy goods which the indirect taxes have made clearer.
  2. A deterrent to savings: taxation will clearly reduce people’s ability to save, since it leaves them with less money as their disposal. Taxation may therefore act as deterrent to savings.
  3. A deterrent to enterprise: those who regard profit as a round for enterprise condemn tax on profit because they consider that such taxes checks enterprise. It is argued that the business men will embark on large profit if they are successful. Heavy taxation on profit, it is said, robs them of their possible reward without providing compensation on the case of failure.
  4. Taxation may encourage inflation: we have already seen that one of the methods used to fight inflation is to budget for a large surplus, the object being to reduce by increased taxation the amount of purchasing power in the hands of consumers, with full employment however increased indirect taxation will lead to demand for higher wages, thereby encouraging inflation.
  5. Diversion of economics: taxation of commodities may force produce to direct resources into tax free areas irrespective of the people’s wish.

Introduction

abortion is the removal or explusion of an anbryo or foetus from the uterus, resulting or causing its death. This can be spontaneously as miscarriage or other meals. “abortion” can refer to an induced procedure at any point during human pregnancy. It is sometimes medically defined as either miscarriage or induced termination before the point of variability. Through history, abortion has been induced by various methods and the moral and legal aspects of abortion is subject to intense debate in many parts of the world/jones et al ….. 2004).

however, a clearer definition of abortion is the removal of a growing embryo or foetus from uterus from which it is attached. This general definition covers spontaneously abortion (miscarriage) and induced abortion but distinguished both from premature birth. Live or still. Golden (2001) stated that certain authorities seem to complicate the issue by defining abortion as termination, expulsion or detachment of foetus or fertilized ovum before its time of viability. In general a foetus is not viable before  the 18th weeks of gestation. The following medical terms are used to categorize abortion.

  1. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage):- spontaneous abortion, according to mules (2001) is the sudden termination or explosion of the foetus/pregnancy. It is characterized by complaints of feeling of uneasiness before the unset of specific signs and symptoms, by the mother such as vaginal bleeding that is, brown spotting or bright red blood. Spontaneous abortion can be due to accidental trauma or natural causes, most miscarriages are due to uncorrected replication of chromosomes; they can also be caused by environmental factors.
  2. Induced abortion: this is an abortion brought about by interference either by therapeutic or elective abortion as a result of deliberate human action. (roche, 2004).
  3. Therapeutic abortion:– an abortion performed either
  4. A) to save the life of the pregnant women
  5. B) to preserve the woman’s physical or mental health.
  6. C) terminate pregnancy that would result in a child born with a congenital disorder that would be fatal or association with significant morbidity.
  7. D) selecting reduce the number of foetus to lessen health risks association with multiple pregnancies.

in united kingdom, legal termination of pregnancy is a therapeutic procedure carried out under the terms of the 1967 abortion act (united kingdom abortion act, 2011). Before this type of abortion can be carried out 12 registered medical practitioners should be of the opinion that the pregnancy should be terminated and consent must be obtained from husband and wife. The procedure is performed after an agreement must have been reached between the two doctors.

  1. Elective abortion: this is an abortion performed at will by an individual in contravention of the abortion act (united kingdom abortion act, 2011). This type of abortion of performed for any other reason. Such procedures are illegal and punishable by imprisonment especially in country like nigeria. It is attempted by unqualified, non-expert person or non-medical (quack) practitioner. It can also be done by patients herself by ingesting corrosive substances such as taking blece, potash, lime or excessive salt.

The world-wide legal states of abortion ranges from complete prohibition to elective procedures at the request of the pregnant woman. Olitan (2010) opined that in the  environmental concerns. Social-economic development and recognition of the right of women to control their own fertility and aided by technological innovational. Abortion  has gradually emerged from an aura of social ambivalence. However, abortion has continued ranging debates in political, social, medical, theological and legal fields (christian 1999). To this end, two major  camps has remerged namely:-

  1. The pro-choice
  2. The pro-life

The pro-choice fights for the legalization of abortion and hence that a woman should  have the right to decide whether or not to have her baby while pro-life activist on the other hand fight for the right of the unborn child to live and hence are vehemently opposed to the legalization of abortion (christian 1999).

Introduction

the history development of the nigerian media, has its roots in colonialism and the through the missionary efforts of one white reverend the rt, reverend henry townsend. This most called iwe irolin fun a wonera egba ati yoruba.

reverend townsend did not publish a political newspaper as it obtains today. But he went on to set the objectives of this paper so as to get the people to read and seek for information by reading.

the phenomenon or institution known as the mass media are the agencies through which message, information, knowledge and influences are transmitted to certain persons within a specific place. Such specific place could involve people who are anonymous and autonomous, living in different socio-cultural and economic background. The audience or leadership could be people whose particular frames of reference revolve around different. Political ethnic religious and social experience.

however, the fundamental of mass media communication insisted that such a message should reach an anonymous audience device. This precisely, means that it is a whole institution, working as a system and acting as carries or transmitters of such messages.
