1.0  INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Most advertising strategies will agree that creating consumers product is fundamental to both profit seeking companies and non-profit organizations. Indeed creating superior consumers product is a necessary condition for a company securing a niche in a competitive environment, not to mention a leadership position in the advert (Day 1990). According to Porter (1980) a company can follow two generic routes to compete in an advert differentiation and low-cost. Day (1990) maintains that both approaches have the same objective to create superior consumers product, because regardless of which of these routes is emphasized, the effort will fail unless significant consumer products is created (Day, 1990: 163).

Day (1990), addressed the issues in analyzing consumers products and proposed that it can be expressed in a “value equation”. Consumers perceive benefits – consumers perceived cost = perceived customers value” (p.142). Although Day’s approaches to consumer product is basically sound, some detail regarding consumer-customers remains under. Example, the process by industrial consumers in detail, but this is only in principle a part of much more complex process of product valuation by consumers. Hence consumers overall product valuation is still missing in the literature. Such a framework should address the issues of how consumers perceive the benefits and costs of products as well as what possible benefits and costs customers may perceive from products in the market.

In addition, the “product”, has discrepant meanings in the marketing literature, especially between its two areas. Marketing strategy and consumer behaviour, what advertising medium mean by customers “value” is quite different from the meanings of the “consumer value”, discussed in consumer behaviour research (Clowson and Vision 1990). Generally speaking “consumers product purchase at the time of buying, while “consumer values” stress people’s valuation on the consumption or possession of production of products. Actually Days, approach to customers value (Day 1990), by emphasizing the customers perception, indicate a direction in which the two different, but related, concepts “value(s) in advertising discipline might be integrated. The current research work helps accomplish the integration by suggestion a model of consumers value for consumer product.

Advertising is part of the flow of communication and information process, which exposes the consumer to variety of stimulus. It is credited with raising our standard of living, lowering unit costs of mass produced goods providing information and helping new forms enter the market place. It is monitored by the industry of mass media consumer groups and government agencies in an effort to eliminate deceptive and unfair advertisement and commercials. Advertising has become a workhouse that serves many communication needs of society.

Abstract

The deterioration of the moral life of children who grow into youthful age and then into adulthood in the face of immoralities has become an issue which needs urgent action in today’s nigerian society. This can be attributed to a lot of reasons but the mass media with us persuasive messages cannot be exonerated. Television being a viable medium of the mass media stands at the fore in shaping the attitudes of children. This research work has therefore made a good attempt at unrevealing the various effects of television programmes on nigerian children using gaius benton schools as a pivot. In this regards, a historical background of events bading to this study and analysis of findings and recommendations are duly presented. It is found in this research work that television programmes affect children’s moral behaviour both positively and negatively depending on the moral standards of the programme. The appraised and critical examination of issues are the mainstay of this research work thus, if the recommendation are heeded it will help in enforcing and maintaining good, upright and acceptable moral behaviour in nigerian children.

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1 background of study

television is a sight and sound medium through which messages and information ideas are communicated to a wide range of audience.

television viewing is a common activity engaged in by children, especially in this era of proliferation of television as a medium for communication.

to this end, television messages are broadcast for certain purposes, this implies that television through it’s programmers’ has certain influence on individuals as including children.

this chapter presents an overview of television and a brief history of television. It also encapsulates the statement of problem of this research work, the objective of this study, significance and the scope of study, research question as well as operational definition of certain terms.

television has made tremendous impact on nigeria society and in the world at large. It possesses immense power to influence the viewer and sharpen his sensitivity in all spheres of life. Various theories have been propounded by different scholars, some of which support the fact that the media possess immense power in influencing the viewer, while others have consistently countered the notion.

television as one of the world’s most amazing inventions has come to stay and has over the years been a veritable channel for communication in the world.

the effects of television on adults can be significant but its influence in children goes much deeper. The increasing rate of immoralities in the society today among youths can be easily attributed to inventions of technologies like television, internet, films and motion pictures by an average nigerian.

this study therefore is an examines the influence television viewing exacts on nigerian children. Gaius benton schools; cut across all sections of children from nursery, primary to secondary school.

it x-rays how the moral behaviour of children can be affected by television viewing which can be positive or negative.

television is viewed in almost every home by people of all ages, the senile, parents, youths, children even infants.

the intensity of viewing by children and the extended periods of time over which they view television raises concern for their moral development.

the world today is said to be a global village thus issues, events and experiences going on in one part of the world can be seen instantly by people in other parts. People have more information about what is going on in world’s events than any other generation in human history.

television over the years has played a pivotal role in the lives of individuals particularly children. The rapid growth of television after the world war ii brought entertainment and information into the homes of many.

large space communication was achieved in 1962 when a space probe radioed data, was moved back to the earth as it speed past the planet venues. The satellite made possible the broadcast over television between europe and the united states of america and today, the rest of the world.

cable television arrived in the 1970’s to most areas of the united states and now, to other parts of the world”. Akpan (2002, p.19) the use of television was expanded by the use of home videos and dick system.

television uses a person-to-person communication gestures, facial expression to effect communication to it’s audience.

television as a broadcast medium has its main functions of information, education and entertainment on a wide range of subjects. An average child has access to but a small part of such information but it’s influence cannot be over emphasized for a look they say is worth more than a thousand words.

television programmes may contain historical, scientific social, religious, economic and other matters. Those programmes when viewed especially by children broaden their cosmological perspectives thereby giving them better insight into happenings around him.

television has served as a viable tool for instruction on religions matters. It has also served in experimental purposes. When properly used, quality television introduces children to a world beyond their classroom and motivate them to learn. Because children relate easily to television as a medium they are familiar with, they are more apt to absorb the material they learn from it.

the amount of television programmes watched by children has caused considerable concern for parents and educators alike. It is thought that children remain glued to the television set for long periods of time, viewing unsuitable programmes which a=mat adversely affect not only their cognitive but emotional development. No doubt, children are susceptible to the images which they see on the television. This therefore stress the fact that immoral programmes can to a large extent affect the morality of children all over the country and the would at large.

communication through the television can be referred to as purposive because the information disseminated are meant to affect the audience positively or negatively. That is, it has a variety of consequences which may be direct or indirect.

such effects or consequences include such factors as emotional response, attitudinal shift or changes in a child’s view of the world after exposure to certain kinds of media.

children have the capacity to give themselves over completely to the world created by pictorial media (television). Such intense involvement often leads to storing emotional response and to a large extent affect the moral behaviour of children.

1.2  statement of problem

many people think that television viewing does not have lasting positive or negative effect on children. Studies have shown through analysis of the effects of television programmes over the years that the effects of television viewing on children is great.

this study seeks to find out the degree or extent to which the children of gaius benton schools have been affected by television viewing and to establish if there are programmes on television that can enhance or mar the moral behavior of the children match.

there have been cases where children fold papers and light them up with attempts to practice cigarette smoking, having watched the action on the screen of television.

the kinds of clothing children see on television seems to shape their demands on parents who purchase clothes for their children, especially at festive periods. All these acts and more are caused as a result of visuals on the screen of television.

1.3  objectives of study

the major objective of this study is to determine the impact of television viewing on the moral behaviour of nigerian children.

  • To examine the benefits derived by children from television viewing.
  • To determine the negative as well as the positive affects of television on the lives of nigerian children.
  • To determine how the effects affect other members of the family and the nigerian society at large.
  • To encourage television stations to promote generally acceptable social values and norms, foster the spirit of self discipline and generally accepted moral standards through the programmes watched by children.

1.4  significance of study

this study is immensely important especially to nigerian parents because it will help to inform them on the effects of television on the moral behaviour of their children as it will help them determine what programmes to expose their children to.

this study will serve as a means of future research for media researchers, scholars and students.

it will also help media ie television stations know the right type of programmes to air for children consumption so as to build morals and not kill morals in children.

1.5  research questions

the researcher of this work has prepared certain questions to help in the course of his study.

  1. Do children derive benefit from television viewing?
  2. Does it have positive or negative effect on the moral life of the children?
  • How does this affect other members of the family and the society at large?
  1. Can television programmes maintain standards that can ensure acceptable moral behaviour of children?

1.6  scope of the study

this study covers the effect of television viewing on the moral behaviour of nigerian children. Gains benton schools as a representation of children of all ages serves as the case study of this research work.

although, the main function of television as a sight and sound medium is to inform, entertain and educate its audience. This study will reveal the extent it does these with respect to the effects of viewing habit of children of gains benton schools where the work is countered.

this research work is based on a sample of children between the ages of two (2) to eighteen (18) years of age (nursery to secondary school age).

1.7  limitation of study

the greatest limitation to this study is time factor. There is limited time for the researcher to explore the topic.

secondly, some of the children are too small and can neither read no write or even respond to questions through interview. Also, some of the respondents, students/pupils are too naive as they feel that the questions will be used against them.

finally, financial constraint is another set back encountered by the researcher.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

The internet plays a fundamental role in organizations and societies. The basic fact

justifies  the  information  revolution  that  has  been  taking  place  across  the  globe  in  recent

times. The term  internet, according to Cawkell  in  Ogedegbe (2006, p.152) is a large
computer  network  formed  out  of some  thousands  of  interconnected  networks,  and it
supports  a whole range of  services such  as  electronic,  file  transfer  protocol, data base
access and  many others.  It is  therefore not  surprising the success  story behind the  advent
of  the  internet.  It  is  also  known  as a  network  that  links  computers all  over  the  world  by
satellite  and  telephone, connecting users  with  service  networks  such as Email and  the
world wide web. Today the  internet has linked  thousands  of nations  and enterprises across

the world. Hence the world which appears physically large has been made small by the internet and justifies the reference to the world as a global village.

The internet gave rise to the birth of social networking sites, which, according to Okenwa (2008, p. 15) are web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals to meet strangers, but rather that they enable users to articulate and make visible their social networks. This can result in connections between individuals that would not otherwise be made, but that is often not the goal, and these meetings are frequently between “existing ties” who share

2

some offline connection (Hawthorn, 2005). On many of the large social networking sites, participants are not necessarily “networking” or looking to meet new people; instead, they are primarily communicating with people who are already a part of their extended social network.

Social networking began in 1978 with the Bulletin Board System (or BBS.) The BBS was hosted on personal computers, requiring that users dial in through the modem of the host computer, exchanging information over phone lines with other users. This was the first system that allowed users to sign in and interact with each other; it was quite slow since only one user could be logged in at a time. Later in the year, the very first copies of web browsers were distributed using the bulletin board, Usenet. Usenet was created by Jim Ellis and Tom Truscott,

and it allowed users to post news ws‖articles. The difference between Usenet and other BBS and administrator or central server. There are modern forums that use the same idea as Usenet today,

including Yahoo Groups and Google Groups.

The first version of instant messaging came about in 1988 with Internet Relay Chat (IRC). IRC was Unix-based, limiting access for most people. It was used for link and file sharing, and generally keeping in touch with one another. Geocities was among the first social networking sites on the internet, launching its website in 1994. Its intent was to allow users to

create their own websites, dividing them into groups based   on   the   website‘s

TheGlobe.com was launched, offering users the ability to interact with people who held the same interests and publish their own content. Two years later, in 1997, AOL Instant Messenger and SixDegrees.com were launched. This was the year instant messaging became popular and it was the first time internet users were able to create a profile and be-friend each other.

3

Friendster, created in 2002 was the pioneer of social networking. In its first three months, the social networking website acquired 3 million users, amounting to 1 in 126 internet users being members at the time. Friendster served as the launching point for the widely popular MySpace, which cloned Friendster and launched after just 10 days of coding. In the following years, other social networking websites like Classmates.com, LinkedIn and Tribe.net started to come up, including what was to be the most popular social networking website in internet history, Facebook.com was launched in 2004 with the intent to connect U.S. college students, starting with Harvard College. In its first month, over half of the 19,500 students signed up. After gaining popularity, Facebook opened its registration to non-college students, and in 2008, Facebook surpassed MySpace as the leading social networking website. Social networking has come a long way since 1978, and we will all witness its evolution for years to come, forever changing the way people connect with one another.

While social network sites have implemented a wide variety of technical features, their backbone consists of visible profiles that display an articulated list of Friends who are also users of the system. Profiles are unique pages where one can “type oneself into being” Sunder (2003, p. 3). After joining a social network site, an individual is asked to fill out forms containing a series of questions. The profile is generated using the answers to these questions, which typically include descriptors such as age, location, interests, and an “about me” section. Most sites also encourage users to upload a profile photo. Some sites allow users to enhance their profiles by adding multimedia content or modifying their profile’s look and feel. Others, such as Facebook, allow users to add modules (“Applications”) that enhance their profile.

4

After joining a social network site, users are asked to identify others in the system with which they have a relationship. Most social network sites require bi-directional confirmation for Friendship, but some do not. These one-directional ties are sometimes labelled as “Fans” or “Followers,” but many sites call these Friends as well. The term “Friends” can be misleading, because the connection does not necessarily mean friendship in the everyday vernacular sense, and the reasons people connect are varied (Boyd, 2006).

These sites also provide a mechanism for users to leave messages on their Friends’ profiles. This feature typically involves leaving “comments,” although sites employ various labels for this feature. In addition, social networks often have a private messaging feature similar to webmail. While both private messages and comments are popular on most of the major networking sites, they are not universally available.

Beyond profiles, Friends, comments, and private messaging, network sites vary greatly in their features and user base. Some have photo-sharing or video-sharing capabilities; others have built-in blogging and instant messaging technology. There are mobile-specific social network sites (e.g., Dodgeball), but some web-based sites also support limited mobile interactions (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, and Cyworld). Many networking sites target people from specific geographical regions or linguistic groups, although this does not always determine the site’s consistency. Orkut, for example, was launched in the United States with an English-only interface, but Portuguese-speaking Brazilians quickly became the dominant user group (Kopytoff, 2004). Some sites are designed with specific ethnic, religious, sexual orientation, political, or other identity-driven categories in mind. There are even sites for dogs (Dogster) and

cats (Catster), although their owners must manage their profiles. This then brings to mind the fact that everyone needs to interact both humans and animals alike.

1.2  Statement of the Problem

The  introduction  of  information  technology  in  Nigeria  is  a  welcome  development.

The use of internet for educational purposes is also of immense benefit especially in the area of being globally relevant and current. However, when it becomes a substitute for

good  means  of  social  interactions  and   academic study among  young  people,  it  should

give  cause  for concern.

Students  nowadays  spend  the  better  part  of  their  time  in  school  on  information

technology  devices such  as  palmtops,  iPods and  blackberry.  On   close enquiry,   one
usually finds out that they are social  networking  with  friends  and rarely getting
information  on their  various  school  courses.  Often times,  information  sought is  subject to
the  use  of  technological  media  especially  for  pleasure,  to  while  away time and to
interrelate with friends  and pals on Facebook, twitter  e.t.c. The question this research seeks

to answer is; how has social networking influenced

INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY

It is necessary to glorify the minds that made ventures to the establishment of media arena.  Media as a watchdog and the mirror of the nation perform crucial role in the society.  Media educate, entertain, analyses, interprete, motivate, create awareness, create avenue, to  failure and to success.  Media as well monitors evaluate and correct all wrong activities concerning human existence.  It executes and recommends encodes and decodes and ensures feedback etc.

Media is “metaphoric “ when we termed it to be a watchdog of the nation and as well  the mirrow through which the nation see and recognize itself.  It is the importance of the media that place it to that position in that somebody cannot just get up and started praising or criticizing a nation or  society without having   in mind any channel of dissemination of his  formation  whether good or bad information all convey sense to the target audience.  It is therefore at this junction that journalist uses media aid to bring to the nation what their society  is like and how their government is like and how good or bad the personalities  involved are like, then it is through this means that they will know what they are and how their activities moves,  whether  it encourages the audience or discourages them.

It was through this mirrow media “ The News that exposed the forgry certificate of Alhaji Sdisu Buhari which he did at the University of Toronto Candada.  This made president Obasanjo after taken over the government to launch  crusade that will redress what he saw in the mirrow.  This made Alhaji Salisu Buhari to be brought down from his position of speak House of Representatives.

The media educates the ignorant, it teachers them from known  to unknown,  in that it was when media publishes or airs what people know that they will analyze it  to those who does not know.  It was through media that people get to know what brought about the removal of Evans Ewerem from the position of senate president because of his falsification of age.  The Nigeria media therefore exposes them, the evil  operators of their evil deed and drag them down from the success to failure through monitoring of their movements and activities and evaluating and correcting their wrongs by disseminating it on air and preparing the audience to feedback and  recommending to the government  the punishment that they deserve for the issue of awareness to be accomplished.

Therefore this study is an attempt to discover how media as an instrument for eradicating corruption of Obasanjo anti-corruption crusade.  A case study of FRCN.

Since assuming office in May 1999, President Olusegun Obasanjo has never hidden his   intention   to fight corruption, which has permeated the social fabric of Nigeria from the top to bottom

In order  to realize that goal, he  set up the independent corrupt practices and other  Related offence commission, otherwise known as the ICPC, headed by Justice Mustapha Akanbi, a retired judge of he court of Appeal.

But since then, the commission had remained a came duck  and toothless bulldog until recently.  In what observers see as a departure from the past and a renew vigour in the anit- graft campaign, the ICPC in earl December initiated the arrest of prominent publicans and former government officials.  In one fell swoop a serving minister was fired over allegation of corrupt  practices. Not only was former minister of labour and productivity, Alhaji Hassani Akwanaga sacked he was later arrested by security agencies for involvement in & 214m scam in the jinx  National identity card scheme being handled by the minister of internal Affairs.  He  was the permanent secretary of that ministry before retiring adhering appointed a minister.

The ICPC is currently prosecuting about sixty-two persons for various offences, these of the commissions and company executives.  The commission is said to have received over 942 petitions since inception, out of which about 400 are still being investigated.

1.2   STATEMENT OF RESEARCH  PROBLEM

The problem of study is the effect of the media as an instrument of eradicating corruption, A case study of federal radio Corporation of Nigeria  in  effort in Obasnjo’s anti-corruption crusade.

It is the opinion of the researcher to see if there is any significant effect on media being a powerful instrument to Obasnjo’s crusade against corruption.  Truly, their has been series of struggle to attain this objectives.

Similarity, the legal  philosophers had various motions of the nature, meaning and scope of corruption.  Today the struggle to bring to the publics the notification,   of their  freedom  form  corruption by the media has being a respected attempt done by the media for it is the obligation of the media to carry out government opinions, translate it and analyze it    to layman’s understanding.

Today it is a matter of national  and international affairs or concern in that the rule of law has no meaning as some government in African countries are dictatorial in nature and operate  above the law, thereby something or action that is above the law of its land is a problem  and that is the statement of problem of corruption and Obasanjo’s crusade against that thereby FRCN as the powerful instrument to enforce awareness and motivates actions which was achieved at last.

For instance late Abacha chose Barinabas Jabilla (Nick named Rogers) as his killer squared leader who carried out a lot of assassination for him therefore instead  of investing money on development, he rather used the money to send sergeant Rogers to North Kores to learn self defence and assassination and as well was given asset to presidential jet and many cars of which was  announced   that tell magazine described his appearance as hefty bearded Rogers who always poses  a deceptive look with his athletic physique and cherubic face who usually decked in a special black Arab captain when on a mission to kill,  all enemy of  evil like assassination  of Kurdirat  Abiola late and others simply because of the interview granted to here by  the British Broadcasting corporation where she exposed late Abacha, she was killed because she vowed to fight Abacha’s corruption to the last.  She was killed because her husband Abiola late won  a free and fair election  which was annulled on June 12.

Problems are imminent in every aspect of human endeavour.  As scholars researchers, students, we know that the Nigeria Nation is bed veiled with  so much corruption which has hitherto been a constraint to National development.  A category of corruption is synominous  with militaries, politicians, some are caused by employer government  agencies, the common men, leaders of thought, the youths, the aged and these are the component that make up the federation.  A sample of corruption which this work tends to address is crime, drug abuse juvenile delinquency, cultism, bribery and disobedience.

Therefore in a situation like this, the media as a powerful instrument for eradicating corruption is at work but suffers in that there is no freedom of media activities.

Yet that does not stop the media from motivation and action though some personnel  lost  their lives in the process,  a good example is late Gwa founder of News watch, who was assassinated.

1.3   OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

As one may ask what is the intention of the researcher on the objective of this research work.  The research intends at the end of this work, to provide a lasting solution to the problem of corruption in Nigeria.   It also intends to assess the Obsanjo anti-corruption crusade to tell the public how far it has gone in trying to eradicate corruption in the society.  It also tends to form a frame work or basis for further researchers as far as corruption is concerned in Nigeria.

1.4   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research work  will go a long way to wards using the media to address the issue of corrupt practices in Nigeria and media as a  powerful instrument to achieve the positive objectives.

This is the dream that has almost come true in that no nation without media that will stand and human beings who are being governed will not have their  happiness without having full possession of their freedom.  That is why it has been nice researching on this  topic which brought about knowing the opinion of the federal Republic of Nigerian government which stated that he was committed to the rule of law hence he promise to ride the country of corruption and has infact set examples by first of all probing and indicting some military ex-state administrators for corrupt practices and probes on all governmental departments.

We must not fail to welcome the constitutional democracy, be it as benevolent, as  it may be, a military regime still falls short of the mark.  It is a government that owe’s it origin and authority to sheer force and not to the people.  We would like to have a government that will owe  its origin and authority to the people and as well give its accountability to the people  and can have an air of change in mind when he did not  account to his people fine likewise was promised  by president Olusegun Obsanjo  on the day of his launching on 9th September  1999 at Bayalsa state in Yenegua,  he promised to be cooperative with the staff and to work towards the upliftment of the standard of living of the people, maintenance of open door policy and accountability of the people he governed and avoidance of false manifestoes. With these corruption will be reduced and media will perform  its roles effectively without hindrance.

1.5   RESEARCH  QUESTIONS

  1. In which ways do you think that media has helped in this crusade?
  2. How media aided as an instrument for eradication of corruption through Obasanjo anti corruption crusade?
  3. How do you feel that corruption will even end in the life of Nigerians?
  4. Do you consider the step taken by president Obasanjo towards the crusade against corruption in Nigeria?
  5. What has the press done about this?

1.7   LIMITATION OF STUDY

In the course of this writing, a lot of problems were encountered as inadequate materials.  Easy  access to materials for this work became difficult even in the school library, the ones seen could not bring the proper meaning or satisfy the demand of the study; in the course of this, I had to travel far in obtaining my materials that makes this study writing a reality.

Time factor: Shuffling in between exams and class work with the limited time at hand distributed this work.  it posed an unnecessary delay in carrying out proper research suitable for this study.  Time as one of the problem emanated as a result of school calendar programme.

In the course  of this work also inadequate funding posed a little treat to the completion of this work, most of the time I am handicapped financially at this season of exams, all these and others are the combinations of this study.
