ABSTRACT

The major energizer of economic and development in Nigeria since independence is the financial industry. The government has been formulating various monetary and fiscal policies commercial banks under the strict supervision of the Central Bank of Nigeria. To be able to pursue these policies towards ensuring methodical, economic, industrial and socio-political development, the need enough fund to support lending to various individual and corporate customers, so when any of the loan facilities granted become bad or doubtful debts for commercial banks are not able to fulfill perfectly this responsibility and this has been the effect of mounting bad debt in book of commercial bank especially with the recent withdrawal of deposits by government department and parastatals. Deposits now are expensive, and the banks need money to back up their lending.

This research study is on “effect of bad and doubtful in commercial bank”. The study was carried out through administration of questionnaire on both employees and customers of Unity bank. The aim was to find out the effect and control of bad and doubtful debt in commercial bank. And interview was also conducted the only cheapest source of loanable fund for commercial bank is the amount on their bad and doubtful account, this is shown by the findings effects towards recovering substantial portion of such debt becomes imperative and compelling on the bank. It also shows the slip shot manner with each loan facilities granted, and treated by bank employees and customers alike, additional control of new debts have been identified and recommended for adoption by banks.

CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

The word “bad and doubtful debt” is used in the banking to refer to the portion of loans, advances and over drafts granted by bank which has proved difficult and seemingly impossible to recover in full from the respective committed customer. Such debt do not emerge instantaneously but rather are a gradual result of “lending errors” by lending officers and subsequent improper administrative handling of the facilities among other factors.

The commercial banks are in the services industry. They are aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals and corporate bodies without underplaying the importance of profitability to the shareholders and deposits alike. A bank is therefore expected to ensure that sufficient liquidity of funds meet cash demand by its customer at short notices. This in addition to maintaining sufficient profitability hold through proper and efficient management.

A business has two  basic source of capital:

  1. Owner’s Capital: That is equity contributed by shareholders (including retained earnings) which is essentially used for he purchase of the initial assets of the business and its initial working capital.
  2. Borrowed Funds: Which refers to external fund required and injected into the business by management subject to the articles and memoranda of Association. It is here that the commercial bank play an important role by granting long and short term loans and advances. It is in the process of granting those loans facilities that error occurs. Losses resulting from such errors will be the focus of this research.

Through the proper use of interest rate banks are able to attract depositors of various terms. Such depositors include, short term deposits ranging from 7 days to 6 months, long term, deposits current account. This is regarded as special borrowing by the bank since the bank of any purpose(s) could use any deposits without recourse to the depositors, and such depositors are only payable on demand or at any agreed date. It is these depositors, which provide the basis for banks lending to various customers. This is subject of the reserve ratio set by the central bank of Nigeria (CBN). The interest rates charged on loans by banks are usually higher than the rates they pay on deposit and are determined by the federal government. It was the interest rates chargeable and payable on  loans facilities and deposits respectively.

The numbers of volume of good loan and advance seriously determine the degree of profitable commercial banks. Consequently, profitable commercial banks have to limit or eliminate the number of bad account in their lending portfolio. It is necessary to note that all funds tied up in bad and doubtful account are not accountable for further onward lending.

Also, with the advent of CBN prudential guidelines, non performing loans and advances who interest have been outstanding on these account are not reflected in the earnings of commercial bank, but charged to interest suspense and charged income when realized. Bad debt regarded as negative contributors to the profitability of commercial banks.

So banks should be expected to be the most relevant to provide for bad debts unless it is unavoidable.

Another dimension however is that critics are quick in pointing out that the high bad or doubtful debts figures in final accounts of commercial banks could be realistic. It is also alleged that banks could use such provision to evade tax. It also demonstrate the incompetence of the lending bankers in

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A business combination takes place when two or more business organization come together to form a single economic unit. Business combinations; could take the form of merger and acquisition where two or more previously autonomous concerns come together under common control, there is a formation of a new company, which acquires the (assets and possible the liabilities) of  two or existing  business.

Merger and acquisition are the fastest ways for a business to dramatically change its position in the market place (i.e.  acquisition of a wide market area). Either transaction can alter the fundamental dynamics of an  organization almost  over night by changing the scope or breath of products services the business  renders as well as the model under which it competes.

When the board of directors of two companies agrees to come together  (amalgamate) in the interest of both mergers  is the   right term. On the other hand, a company wanting to gain control of the another business whose board not recommend the change is said to be attempting to take over the company. Acquisition may be defined as an act of acquiring effective control by one company over an asset management of another company without any combination of companies when management of acquiring company target company  mutually and willingly agree for the takeover, its called acquisition of friendly takeover embrace the practice of merger and acquisition in the years to come. This is so because the promulgation of the Nigerian investment promotion commission decree of 1995, which gave foreigners and foreign companies unfettered access to own up to 100% in Nigerian companies and  bank. This decree repeated the exchange control act of  1962 and Nigerian enterprises promotion decree of 1988, which used to choke foreign investment interests. The old ratio of 60% to Nigerians and 40% to foreigner stipulated by Nigerian enterprises promotion  act by 1988 changed. Armed with the new investment promotion commission decree of 1995, foreign stakeholders in Nigerian companies  quoted and unquoted have been scheming and maneuvering  to exchange their  status  for the  better. The statistics from securities and exchange commission shows that the share of foreign shareholding in Nigeria quoted companies increased from 25.14% in 1994 to 25.25% in 1995. The wholly owned Nigerian Breweries Plc acquired Schweppers Nigeria Limited in 1995. In all these, the glaring fact about mergers and acquisition in Nigeria is that it is, at the moment dominated by companies that have common foreign affiliation. It appears the common affiliation enable them to reach easier agreements. On the other hand with the deregulation of the foreign exchange policy of government, more companies are expected to enter merger and acquisition.

1.2     STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

In a lecture deliver to a special committee of bankers by professor Charles Soludo on July 6th 2004 titles “consolidating the 21st century, says  the Nigeria is the most populous black nation with the estimate population of 137 million and she is one of the oil producing countries  in the world. However, Nigeria economy still does not have infrastructure, to support large economic activities. The banking sectors has been criticized for:

  • High leading  rate
  • Sharp practice  in the forex market
  • Low capital base
  • Most  banks make profit through unethical means which is  their core banking business.

It is in the view of this, the verdict of professor Charles Soludo, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria  on 6th  of  July  2004 that all Nigeria bank  are to beef   up their  capital base  from N2 billion to N25 billion by the December 2005 will definitely help in this regard.

The banking system however has continued  to be  characterized by a number of structural problems some   of which include:

Low capital base: the average capital base of Nigeria banks

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION:-
The money market is place or mechanism by which short – term funds or exchanging financial assets representing short-term claim are obtained .
A money market can be simply defined as a market consisting of financial institutions and other dealers in short term money and credit who either want to lend or borrow money .As a group , these financial organization and deders facilitates the borrowing and lending of short –term money by bringing together those institutions with surplus funds which they wish to lend on a short- term basis and those wished to borrow.
The Nigeria money market could be said to love started with the commencement of commercial banking in 1894. However , due to various military factors ,the development of the money market was not possible until the establishment of the Nigeria central bank and the introduction of the money instruments . it is important to note that the money market in Nigeria is not located in any fixed or particular place or building where money is bought and sold . it is merely a term , which embraces all the institutions that handle the purchases , sales and transfer of short term money and credit instruments . The market operates by means of the telephone or personal contacts between the participants. It is only when a deal is struck that most transactions are finally concluded at the central bank were credit and debit are raised. This is the way money market developed economics also operates ( ie mainly by telephone and personal contacts ) but does not mean that the market is never a designated place.
Money market activities can be carried out at specific area, street , as in the case of well street in new York or lomba street in London . The later being almost synonymous with the London money market, is the central of bank head offices and discount houses.
The money market provides the central bank of Nigeria with a very important financial environment to implement monetary policy operating through the market , it raises or lowers bank reverse through open market purchase and sales of securities.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
A part from performing traditional function of the money market , are of the main reasons for establishment of Nigerianzation of the credit basis . A money market was therefore necessary in the achievement of this objective by providing outlets in term of local money assets for the investment of surplus funds in the country as well as funds repatriated from abroad . it was also necessary to provide for government a source for short- term financing which among other things can release for capital expenditure some of the fund which at that time government deployed as work capital.
The study is to assess the role of the operation of the Nigeria money market in indigenising the credit base of the Nigeria economy.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:
The objective of the study is to assess the role of t

ABSTRACT

This study was design to examine the effect of violent behavior on adolescent. Using selected secondary school in Sapele Local Government area of Delta State as a case study. In attempt to achieve the objectives of the study, three hypotheses derived from the research questions were tested. A structured question was the instrument for the collection of relevant data from the sampled respondent. The collected data were subjected to both descriptive (frequency count, table and percentages) and inferential statistical (chi-square) analysis. The analysis of data revealed the following findings; that there is a significant relationship between perception of lack of equity and adolescent violent behavior, there is a significant relationship between poverty and adolescent violent behavior and also there is significant relationship between ineffective government and breakdown of law and order. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that the government should create enabling environment for the youth, more job opportunities and sustainable development for the area as well as adopt equity and fair play in the sharing of the resources in the state. Adults and government officials should lead by good examples, because adolescent in the society observe the behavior of their role model and put such behavior into practice. And also, media content should be restricted to adolescent.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There is a great concern about the incidence of violent behavior among children and adolescents. This complex and troubling issues needs to be carefully understood by parents, teachers and other adults.

Children as young as preschoolers can show violent behavior. Parents and adults who witness the behavior maybe concerned, however, they often hope that the child will grow out of it. Violent behavior in a child at any age always needs to be taken seriously. It should be no be quickly dismissed as just a phase they are going through.

Adolescent access to and consume a variety of these different media forms, many of which have high level of violent content. Most home have television sets and next to sleeping, watching the television (TV) is the frequent activity of adolescent. Lomonaco, Kim, and Ottaviano (2010) assert that the average child in the United States spends four hours a day watching the television. The situation in Nigeria is not very different most children, between 5 and 20 years of age, spend over 6 hours a day using entertainment media (television, commercial and self recorded videos, movies, video games, print, radio, recorded music, computers and the internet(Roberts, Foctir and Rideout, 2005). In recent times, watching Nigeria movies, (Africa Magic) most of which have a high violent content, has become a popular pastime of many youths. The implication n of this is that by the time the average child is 18 years old, he/she would have witnessed many act of violence, including murders. Beresin (2009) found that up to 20 acts of violence per hour occur in adolescent programmes.

The high level of violent content of the media forms correlate with youth violence. Internet website showing violence; (killing, shooting, fighting, etc) correlate with about 50% increase in reports of seriously violent behavior (Lomonaco et al, 2010). The result of the violent media programmes and desensitization to violent video games (Caragey, Cray and Bushman, 2007).

TV sets are commonly present in bedrooms. The effect of having a TV set in a child’s bedroom is that it increases their TV viewing time. It may also imply that parent will be less likely to monitor the content of what is watched, and might not be able to set consistent for media use. Also, such children might participate in fewer alternative activities, like reading, sports and games.

Violence is often considerable, even in programmes which are not advertized as violent. Overall, weapons appear on prime time TV on an average of about nine times each hour. Adolescent shows are programmmes are more likely to juxtapose violence with humor, and are less likely to show the long term consequence of violence.

While violence is not the human race, it is an increasing problem in modern society. With greater access to firearms and explosives, the scope and efficiency of violent behavior has serious consequences. We need to look at the recent school shootings and the escalating rate of youth homicides among urban adolescents to appreciate the extent of this ominous trend. While the cause of youth violence are multi factorial and include such variable as poverty, family psychopathology, child abuse, exposure to domestic and community violence, substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders, the research literature is quite compelling that adolescent exposure to media violence plays an important role in the etiology of violent behavior. While it is difficult to determine which children who have experienced violence are at greatest risk, there appears to be a strong correlation between violence and aggressive behavior within vulnerable at risk segments of youth.

Violent behavior among Nigerian youths

One of the greatest problems in Nigeria is the menace of youth violence and the causes include such variable as poverty, family psychopathology, child abuse, exposure to domestic and community violence, substance abuse and other psychiatric disorders. It has become more sophisticated, dangerous and murderous in propensity. They have greater access to firearms and explosives and have acquired more precision, skill, and have become desensitized through watching media violence and playing violent video games. Youths are often involved in the vanguard of violent video conflicts in different parts of the nation and this has assumed a very serious dimension in recent years. Murder, robbery, rape, cult activities, ethno-religious military, kidnapping, vandalism, arson, etc have become very regular feature in our society.

Cult activities are still thriving in most Nigerian institutions of higher learning.
